A February 2004 trip

Quote: There's a brand-new hostel in Monterey. It has a perfect set-up in a perfect location! FINALLY.

I spent the night in a women's dorm. It had 10 bunk beds but not all were filled. We were right next to a bathroom (more than one toilet) and a shower room (only one shower). The room was clean, as was the whole place.
The common room is HUGE. They had a nice selection of books, magazines, and board games (including some for small children). I think there was a TV, too, but I can't be certain. The kitchen was big, too, with lots of storage and supplies.
Overall, this has to be the best hostel I've stayed in, yet, and I've stayed in many! The surrounding neighborhood seemed safe enough but I don't think I'd venture out after dark alone. My friend and I had a weird experience (it’s too difficult to explain, but as women, we must always be aware of our surroundings). There is, also, an apartment complex next door and the inhabitants looked questionable.

The menu features GARLIC. The garlic fries and burgers are AMAZING and oh so HUGE!!! If you are looking for a step-up in fast food, don't miss this place. There are tables outside, too, so you can enjoy the beautiful weather. Just make sure to bring your toothbrush or at least some gum! Also, if you pick up a coupon book, you can save yourself some money at this place. Enjoy!

We found the sea otters to be our favorites. Watch them eat ice. It's adorable! Also, when you venture in, there is a rectangular box further down the hall that houses little itty-bitty sea creatures. There is usually a volunteer standing there, in our case a fascinating woman. She knew so much about these creatures and showed us so many things we didn't even realize were alive. We could've watched and listened to her all day. Ask her some questions and have her point out the various sponges, coral, etc. You, too, will be left in awe.
