Upon arriving at the airport in Vilnius, we were met by 20 relatives who opened their hearts to us, making us truly feel like family. For my mother, it was a deeply moving experience and for me, as her son, it was an opportunity to re-discovery my family roots which I had neglected for so many years due to the fact that Lithuania was under Soviet rule until 1991. A brief history: 16th century Vilnius was one of the biggest cities in eastern Europe. Vilnius, over the years, became an important Jewish city, earning it the nickname, 'Jerusalem of Lithuania'. In the 20th century Vilnius changed rulers many times. Germany occupied it during WWI. Stalin handed Vilnius to Lithuania in 1939 ...Read More

Hotel | "Litinterp Guest House"

We were really fortunate in finding this place right in the Old Town of Vilnius. When travellers first began to visit Lithuania, they could only stay in the old Soviet, concrete tourist ghettos:cold, uncomfortable and pretty much cut off from the center of life in Vilnius. Today there are a number of good places to stay. Littinterp is one of the best in my opinion. They have a number of comfortable, wooden furnished rooms with refrigerator, telephone and radio. They have three singles, 4 twin and 1 triple room. Guests have their own keys with access to their rooms at any time. All rooms are non-smoking. Breakfast is also included in the price-which is cheap-$30 a night for two people. A...Read More

This restaurant is a must if you want a real taste of authentic Lithuanian food. The owner of this restaurant, Rita Dapkute, is an American Lithuanian who worked as a double agent-freelancing for the KGB with the approval of the CIA. Her restaurant serves strickly Lithuanian food made from only Lithuanian products - which means that you cannot order a Coke, or American cigarettes, or anything non-Lithuanian. The food is delicious - especially the beet dishes and the garlic bread. When we were here, there was a band, consisting of college students, who played Lithuanian tunes all night. We were here on our last night, inviting 8 of our Lithuanian relatives fo...Read More

This place is a must for a unique nightclub experience. After the fall of the Soviet Union in Lithuania in 1991, the Lithuanians wanted to discard/shed their soviet past. Today, some Lithuanians have interjected some humor of their past by creating a nightclub with Soviet nostalgia. The interior of this place is filled with Soviet stuff, like machine gun Anna, wearing a Red Army outfit, Red is the color in this disco - there is a MIG fighter plane on the dance floor and in the toilets BREZHNEV'S Party speeches play when you flush your toilet. Lenin's portrait, a bust of Marx, and vodka sold at cheap prices are all part of this unusual place. On week-ends d...Read More

For those travelers interested in Jewish history in VILNIUS, this is a must-see to fully appreciate what has happened to the Jews during the Nazi and Soviet occupation. All of the Jewish organizations were banned by the Soviets in 1939 with most of the Jewish leaders being deported. When Vilnius fell to the Germans in 1941, the Jews, numbering 35,000 were systematically shot in the nearby forest of Paneriai. A ghetto was established in Vilnius, which lasted until general Himmler's orders in 1943 called for the mass murder of 26,000 people. The single gate of the main ghetto is located at the sout end of Rudininku and is marked with a plaque. Walking through...Read More

At the top of a gate tower - the only one of the original nine lucky enough to have survived the Soviet era since the Russians had planned to build a road which would have destroyed this tower - is a museum/chapel which houses the ICON OF THE VIRGIN, reputed to have been from the Crimea by Grand Duke ALGIRDAS IN 1363. This icon is revered by the deeply religious Polish community and is said to be one of eastern Europe's leading pilgrimage destinations. A replica of the icon is in St. Peter's in Rome. When we visisted the icon, there was a line of at least 100 people waiting. At the icon, believers were crying, praying, and seeking healing. BEWARE of beggars around this Ga...Read More
