Quote: Although driving from Atlanta, Georgia to Cody, Wyoming in 3 long days was tiring, we were rewarded handsomely with spectacular scenery as we crossed the northern plains, went through the South Dakota Badlands, over the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, and finally into the lush mountains, fields, and rivers of Yellowstone.

The Hunter Peak Ranch is located about 60 miles northwest of Cody, Wyoming on Hwy 296 (Chief Joseph Hwy). The owners, Lou and Shelley Cary were wonderful, friendly people who were extremely accommodating for our every need or request. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite in a two-story building next to the original house. The facilities were rustic in decor, but all modern amenities were provided. The unit included a living room/dining area off of the kitchen, fully furnished kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a loft with two twin beds above the living area. Located on the banks of the Clarksfork River, our entire family was encouraged to roam around and discover the ranch on our own or we ...Read More

The ranch house dining experience had a homey, friendly atmosphere. We sat at long tables and were served home style. The building itself was built in the 1920's by the present owner's family with exposed hand-hewn logs in the ceiling. The decor included rustic western pieces such as wagon wheels, western art, antlers, etc. We were seated next to other families who were staying at the ranch. This provided us with an opportunity to visit with those we might not have gotten to know otherwise. The owner, Lou Cary, ate at our table. He shared anecdotes from growing up on the ranch we were visiting and how he and is brother learned to ride bareback as children. He was quiet at first, but when asked ...Read More

Hunter Peak Ranch offered many activities for our family to participate in during our stay. One that our two teenagers enjoyed was the horseback riding on trails through the mountains outside of Yellowstone. Lou Cary, owner of the ranch, took them out for a ride for about an hour. The cost was $27 per person the first hour and another smaller charge for additional hours. There was also a day trip available with a sack lunch provided for a set fee. The horses were mild mannered for the children and Lou was patient with them because they were inexperienced riders. They took a leisurely trek through the trails around the ranch near the Clarkfork River and the surrounding hills. He shared ...Read More

We started out at the southern gate of the Grand Tetons National Park. We were picked up by the company we had made reservations with and driven up to the launching point north on the Snake River. It took about 30 minutes to get to the dock. We got in a large raft with a total of about 12 people including our guide. The trip took about an hour to an hour and a half to float down the river where we had left our car. Our guide was excellent. His knowledge of the wildlife, environment, and the politics affecting the river and the park was outstanding. We floated leisurely past the Grand Tetons to the west and saw many types of wildlife. The absolute best thing about the trip was getting to see fle...Read More

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center was large enough to take an entire day to fully appreciate all it had to offer. The price of admission was reasonable and family friendly. There were several levels and exhibits for all members of our family to enjoy. My husband was most interested in the guns and military history, which included weapons, mostly from the American Civil War forward. Our daughter and I very much enjoyed the Native Americans exhibit. We were especially touched by the focus on the women and their place in the family and society of their people. Our son saw many interesting paintings and artwork of western artists. The whole family learned a great deal from the wildlife exhibits inc...Read More

We arrived in the area surrounding Old Faithful in the afternoon about 15 minutes before it erupted. Although there is no way to know exactly when it will erupt, it does so approximately every 90 minutes. I was struck by the number of people who had obviously traveled from other countries to witness this event. We all stood watching anxiously for the geyser to go off. When it did, the crowd let out a collective sigh and then applause followed at the end of the eruption. As nature's show had ended, we all walked to the entrance of the Old Faithful Lodge nearby. Upon entering the building, we were all surprised to see how massive the structure was. The beams and timbers overhead were v...Read More

Traveling from the northeast part of the park from Lamar Valley, we approached Mammoth Hot Springs. We could see it from several miles away. It took another 20 to 30 minutes to arrive at the base of the springs from where we first caught sight of them. The springs are very impressive as the name implies. We walked up from below on boardwalks winding up the hill. This afforded us a very good view as well as an excellent perspective of how large the hot springs are. As we advanced up the slope, we could see white rock formations with steaming pools at the top. Even in the heat of July when we were there, the water was still much hotter than the surrounding air. I especially loved the con...Read More
