Villages and towns along the Sepik River have one way of making cash, and that is by selling carvings, and head dresses to the traders and few tourists who venture up the river. Everyone in the village knows when a boat is coming and brings out their wares. The people are excellent carvers, and many of the items shown are museum quality.
Tambanum is the best village. One long house was stuffed from ceiling to floor with items I would have died to have. Best bring a flashlight because the long house is dark and it was often hard to see details. As I stated before also bring cash, American dollars, as nothing else is taken.
