The Margaret River region has so much to offer

A December 2004 trip to Busselton by Saxby

This stunning area of Western Australia is a fantastic destination for all kinds of travellers - surfers, naturalists, families, or food and wine connoisseurs.

The Margaret River region is known the world over for its fantastic surfing locations and quality wines, and once you begin to explore, you'll discover this and so much more.

The coastline scenery is spectacular, with surf beaches such as Margaret River and Yallingup. For a more protected area, there is Meelup on Cape Naturaliste. Explore the Cape further and you'll have the opportunity to spot seals on rocks viewed from a number of lookouts - don't forget your binoculars.

Wineries are abundant and range from small boutique ones to massive commercial ones. In the boutique market I would recommend Happs, which also has an on-site pottery shed. The pottery is beautiful and their white wines are very good. The larger wineries worth a visit include Xanadu, Voyager, Cullens and Vasse Felix - all produce fantastic reds.

The food is just as amazing, with all the local restaurants making the most of local produce. Make time to visit the cheese factory, chocolate factory, olive grove and candy store.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

You will definitely need a car, as towns and attractions are quite spread out, and it will allow you to truly get off the beaten track and explore. You can, however, get to the region easily on the daily Coachtrans bus leaving from Perth.

Best Things Nearby:
The beach is at your doorstep and the Busselton township is just a short drive away. You must visit the Busselton Jetty, the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, which features an underwater observatory. Of course, the most famous nearby attraction is the Margaret River region, famous for its fantastic wineries and world renowned surf (approximately an hour's drive away).

Best Things About the Resort:
It's well maintained with heaps of facilities and is in a fantastic location. The resort managers, Pat and Bob, are very friendly and helpful, even highlighting a map for us so we didn't miss any of the best wineries.

Resort Experience:
The units are large and contain everything you need, but are a little dated. That being said, there are so many things to see and do in this region, you'll spend very little time in your unit.

Restaurant

This restaurant has quite a reputation in the Margaret River area and it definitely lives up to it. The food is a modern and Mediterranean-style, with an extensive tapas selection as well. The wine list is massive and you can buy most of them by the glass. They also serve an in-house wine straight from the barrel.

The restaurant decor is modern with a rustic wooden feel and is very welcoming, although the ambience is somewhat interrupted because the restaurant is so close to the road. I'm also told that it's a fantastic night out.

This restaurant looks over beautifully manicured lawns and gardens with the vineyards off in the distance. It's fantastic for a casual lunch where you can while away the afternoon in complete relaxation.

The menu features a range of dishes to suit all tastes with a strong use of locally grown produce. The dessert plate to share is 'to die for'. Naturally, Amberley Wines are available by the glass to complement your meal perfectly.

The tour meets up at the mouth of the Margaret River where you are given paddles, life jackets and instructions. Then it's down to the canoes to begin the first leg of the paddle. It's relatively easy going with a number of stops along the way. There's a short bush walk with views of Margaret River as well as the infamous surf break and a number of caves.

The guides are knowledgeable and impart with both European and Aboriginal history. Lunch is an amazing spread of bush tucker and surprisingly you are far from hungry at the end of it. The highlight of the return trip is a race to the beach for a bottle of Margaret River wine, although most participants have trouble paddling their canoe in a straight line.
