Ojai Art Detour Weekend

An October 2003 trip to Ojai by tmhhmt

Quote: Art Detour is an extremely popular artist's studio tour in Ojai. You need a car as you pick up your map downtown and drive from place to place. Great fun.

Ojai Art Detour Weekend

Overview

Quote:
The highlight is of course the Art Detour artist's studio tour. My favorite studio was that of Carmen Abelleira White. Art Detour weekend is one of those events where you think you're the only one who knows about it - then you get to Ojai and it's packed, and return home to find out all your friends were there too and you missed each other by seconds every place you went. But Ojai is wonderful and charming and special no matter who is there or what is going on, so I always recommend it for a weekend getaway. I go at least twice a year.Quick Tips: Most of the studios serve light refreshments, so no need to drag around bottles of water and such. Bring your checkbo...Read More

There are many reviews for Suzanne's Cuisine here, so my additions are: Make Reservations We arrived in Ojai early Friday afternoon and went to the restaurant at 5:30 - when they first open for dinner - expecting that the place would be empty. In fact, the opposite was true. Every seat was taken and they were booked for dinner the entire weekend. We were finally able to get reservations for late lunch Sunday after saying we'd take any table at any time because we'd heard so much about the place and REALLY wanted to eat there. So, even though we didn't get to eat dinner, the staff was great and accommodating. The menu is not that remarkable. I was very...Read More

This is actually a grocery store and not a restaurant, but you can't stay in Ojai long without stopping here. Or, you can but you shouldn't! Once you're in Ojai you're not far from Lake Casitas - and if you're going to Lake Casitas you must take food with you unless you want to eat VERY BAD FOOD from a VERY BAD STAND not far from REALLY SCARY TOILETS. Or, perhaps you've brought your bike and are doing the ride to the beach? Before you leave Ojai, you go straight to Westridge and make yourself a picnic. They have everything in the universe - tons of food they make on site, an actual barbecue pit in the parking lot, fruits, really good wine, cheese, pastries and baked goods to die o...Read More

The night we couldn't get into Suzanne's, the staff there recommended we try this place (very kind of them) -- L'Auberge. I'd been to Ojai a million times and had never noticed this restaurant just off the main street in a blue Victorian home. The owner of the restaurant is Belgian, and I don't know enough about the cuisine to say it was or was not Belgian instead of French, but I do know the food was superb, fantastic, and lovely. The waitress we had was entertaining and solicitous, and the ambience I had expected at Suzanne's (but didn't notice), L'Auberge most definitely has. Though, I must admit they too have plastic chairs on their patio, and I just don't find them appropriate at a rest...Read More

First and most importantly, this place does not accept anything but cash, so go to the ATM in town before heading over here or you will go back to your hotel hungry. The food here is fantastic - I mean, not the best Italian food ever, but really good. The people-watching opportunities at this place are even better. Ladies who lunch on vacation and scarfaced bikers - all vying for spots on the patio under the oak trees. Behind the restaurant is a huge grassy area to sit or let your kids loose to burn off some steam. There's not much seating indoors so expect to eat outside, and if it's raining, head someplace else. I was told the owner grows most of the fruits and vegetables used in...Read More

Her house isn't visible from the road, it's on the grounds of a school, get directions at: http://www.beatricewood.com/directions.html Beatrice Wood was a prolific ceramicist - the Mama of Dada. She died in the late '90s and her former home is now gallery/museum of her works. When Beatrice Wood was alive, everyone went to her studio. It was one of those things you were supposed to do when in Ojai. But I never went because I never liked her work all that much and couldn't imagine having enough money to purchase one of her pieces if I did find one I liked - so why go? But during Art Detour, one experiments, so… Most memorable bit of our visit was... me screaming. ...Read More

Beautiful, peaceful, contemplative. I try to come here at least once during each trip to Ojai. A morning spent quietly contemplating nothing in a gorgeous setting is a blissful way to start the day. The last building on the far right (west) is usually open if you want to sit inside. There are cards with words on them like "Curiosity" that you are supposed to take and use as mantras - can't remember if you are supposed to take words that represent things you lack, or things you want to change, anyway - take a card. Leave a contribution behind if you want. From the parking lot you can walk west out to the edge of a small cliff - sit, stand, walk, meditate, laugh. Relax. The...Read More

This is the most entertaining book store of all time. If you are a booklover this place will suck you in. It will make you forget that the sun is shining and that you are meant to be playing tennis or hiking or going on an art tour. Some of the books are in horrible shape--sun bleached, dried out, falling apart. Did I mention the store is outdoors and all the books are used? Other books are perfect and pristine, exactly what you've been looking for . . . only there are over 100,000 books, so how do you choose? Even though outdoors there are bits of roof and building sort of huddled together and oak trees overhead, whether you pick up a 1970s paperback of Valley of the Dolls ...Read More

Casitas Lake

Attraction | "Lake Casitas"

Quote:
Lake Casitas is a man-made lake resulting from the Casitas Dam - one of the largest lakes in the state, though with the least publicity. Not being a camper I have never stayed overnight but I know many that have. There are lake and hillside campsites and it is easy to get lost driving around them, so when you get your map at the front gate, don’t lose it. I understand that there is a new concession at the lake that will rent you a prestocked/set up at your campsite trailer - that kind of camping I could probably handle. There are hiking and biking trails within the park and there are beautiful easy trails just outside the park that go east into Ojai or west towards the ocean - t...Read More
