An April 2004 trip to New London by Susan Data

Wanting to stay locally for the Easter holiday, we chose to go to Connecticut due to driving time and chose to stay at Lighthouse Inn Resort in New London. The attractiveness of this historic mansion was a trade in for the poor weather conditions we experienced.

Overview

Quick Tips:

Short of the nearby beach, there is absolutely nothing to do around the resort and one must drive away from the resort to even purchase daily papers (USA Today is provided free.)

There are no restaurants available locally within walking distance, but Stash's (a local bar and grill) on Pequot Avenue is wonderful – it’s inexpensive and great for families. The owner is charming and willing to please noticing your presence.

I would recommend taking bicycles to view the local homes in the area.

Lighthouse Inn
Best Things Nearby:
The resort is convenient to nearby casinos (Mohican Sun and Foxwoods) and minutes away from Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium.

Best Things About the Resort:
The inn has been restored to its original grandeur and overlooks the Long Island Sound. The resort has no two rooms that are alike. Each room has custom furnishings, bedding, and antiques. In season, there is a shuttle to the beach (within short walking distance) and a patio overlooking the Sound for those balmy summer evenings.

Resort Experience:
This inn is truly a 4-star Gold Crown resort and offers salon and day spa, tennis, and pool facilities.

The inn comprises three buildings: the original Guthrie Mansion (of which we stayed in with a room overlooking the Sound), the Carriage House, and Watchman's Cottage. The mansion contains 27 guest rooms, the Carriage House contains 24 rooms decorated in French décor, and the Watchman's Cottage is a large studio with private patio for large families. I would not recommend the mansion for families since one can easily even hear the walking of its occupants throughout the building during all hours.

The lobby is magnificent with its winding staircase and its staff is all accommodating and never are without a smile and kind word!

Continental breakfast is served every morning for $5 per person, but it is only served until 9:30am, which is not good for those who sleep late! There is only a microwave, mini refrigerator, and coffee maker in the room and the room offers daily maid service.

Restaurant

This charming pub with its fireplace provided a warm and cozy evening with nightly entertainment. There was a wonderful variety of entertainers and the tavern had weekly specials, one providing a seafood and martini evening.

The dining room of Timothy's presented a magnificent view of the Long Island Sound, and the room had a Victorian ambience and original hand-carved chandeliers. It has been a Zagat Survey Winner with Chef Timothy Grills onboard.
