Most castles started off as fortresses, and Chateau de Chillon started off as a tourist attraction. Originaly built in the 12th century as place where Dukes of Savoy could spend their summers. This castel was immortalized by Lord Byron prehaps his most famous visitor, who wrote a poem about Francois Bonivard one time prisoner of the castel.
Who ever started the catel picked just the perfect spot on the rocky islet just a few meters off the shore of the lake, allowing the elegant lines of Chateau to reflect in to its calm waters with imposing mountain range as a backdrop.
