We had the most fun talking to the locals. They are charming, colorful characters. My wife's favorite incident was at one of the restaurants. There were two women with young kids and babies. My wife was drawn to one of the toddlers. She commented in her broken high-school Spanish to the mothers. They laughed at her attempt to communicate, but a mother's pride has no language barrier. It was easy to determine the child was a boy (not a girl like we thought), their names, the mother's names, and the fact that the mothers were sisters.
We laughed at how much the Casa Maya wanted to accommodate their U.S. guests. They had Superman helping Santa passing out gifts!
Take the ferry out to Isle Mujeres and rent a golf cart to get around. It is like drag racing in slow motion (golf carts don't speed!). No one seems to follow the rules of the road.
Quick Tips:
The bazaar downtown was interesting -- a cheaper place to buy souvenirs from. Prices were high in the Hotel Zone.
Be careful drinking the milk! The milk we bought from Wal-Mart was good. The milk at the hotel and restaurants didn't agree with us.
Best Way To Get Around:
No need to rent a car. The bus system is EXCELLENT and cheap! Most drivers spoke English, or knew enough to understand where we wanted to get off.
