A Real Disappointment

A March 2004 trip to Massanutten by bmoryan

Quote: The resort was a total disappointment. Our unit was fine, except for the brown water. All four resorts had to use the Woodstone Rec Center, where there was one small game room, an exercise room, and ONE pool that was closed every day. The trails are beautiful and there are lots of outdoor activities.

A Real Disappointment

Overview

Quote:
I think we were oversold on the Massanutten resorts because nothing was up to our expectations. Our room had gross brown water and the rec center was in need of repairs and upgrades. We knew it was going to be a pretty remote area, but we still expected things to be available at the resort. This part of Virginia is beautiful; if you want to visit places off the resort be prepared for a long drive.Quick Tips: They've got a lot of activities, but you really need to focus on registering for everything the first night you're there. Classes would fill up fast. You can get a discount if you buy an activity card. Also, be prepared for their sales pitch. At check in, we were told they'd l...Read More

Best Things Nearby:There's nothing nearby. Even on the resort grounds, to go from the timeshare to the rec center, we had to drive for a while. If you drive back out to 81, there are tons of stores (including a 24-hour Wal-Mart). Thanks to a deer, we got to visit the ER, which is state-of-the-art and the physicians were responsive.Best Things About the Resort:The trails are beautiful. The resort has lots of hiking trails. Resort Experience:I've heard so much about Massanutten being a four seasons resort. We couldn't go at a bad time because they've got activities all year long. They do have a lot of things to do, but when we were there, most of them were...Read More

We were interested in a quick meal, so we ran to the Pizzeria. They were pretty busy the night we went, but they were fast. We're high maintenance with pizza (half this, half that; cut into 16 pieces instead of 8), but it was right.

They have some deals and also offer to deliver. The pizza was great. If I had known earlier in the week, we probably would have eaten there more than once.

Everything we had seen at the Woodstone Rec Center had been a disappointment, so I kept my expectations low on this. It was a nice surprise to have them so well organized and on top of what they were doing.

The Natural Bridge is a beautiful area to visit. Unless you're staying there, it's a long drive to get to. Combine this with the Natural Bridge Petting Zoo and it's a great day! At the end of the day, they have a light show with the bridge. There's a walking trail that takes you under the Natural Bridge and ends with waterfalls. My kids enjoyed visiting the cave, the 'Lost River', and the Monacan Indian village. The 'Indians' explain all parts of Indian life. The kids loved identifying deer bones and skunk coats. There are a couple of restaurants to eat at in town, but I'd recommend packing a lunch and having it on your walk. We didn't go to any other exhibits (wax mus...Read More

The front of this is deceptively small. It looks like a little shop. There's LOTS to buy when you get inside. When we bought our tickets, we also bought each child a bag of food they could let the animals eat. When you walk into the zoo, there are a handful of cages with large animals (mountain lions, white tigers, bears). We were surprised to see rabbits hopping around. Then a pig walked by us. On one side is a small farm with goats, cows, and sheep. There were a bunch of baby goats, so my daughter was in heaven seeing the itty-bitty babies. There were other areas with birds, monkeys, and other animals. We quickly figured out that the ones in two ca...Read More

This part of Virginia is full of different caverns. I went to Luray Caverns as a child and decided I wanted to go back. At the resort we were told all the different caverns were nice; the difference was marketing. We were staying at Massanutten and getting to Luray took about 90 minutes. We spent time driving through the mountains, which really adds to driving time. Luray Caverns has added some extra things to visit around the parking lot. We went to the Maze. That was a GREAT time!! We spent over an hour in the maze. It was $5 for adults, $4 for children over 7. Once had our water and settled down, we prepared for our journey through the caverns. We brought ...Read More
