Overview

Quote:
Los Barriles seems to have escaped the hustle and bustle of tourism. The village of Los Barriles has only a few small shops and restaurants. There are no fast food joints, night clubs, or golf courses. There are only two hotels, both which have no phones or televisions. But you will never notice what isn't at Los Barriles because there is enough excitment in the water. This village is a sport fisherman's dream (or fisherwoman as the case may be)! My husband and I stayed at Palmas de Cortez for 5 days which provided basic accomodations, all three meals each day, and two full days of fishing on a cruiser with our own captain and deck hand for about dollars per person - not a bad deal at all. Hotel

There are several accomodation choices available. You may choose a single or double hotel room, a suite with two queen beds and a sofa, or a condo with kitchen facilities. The rooms are basic, as most are in Mexico. Rooms are not fancy, but they are comfortable and clean. There are no phones or TVs (you won't miss them!) but rooms are air conditioned. The resort has been built in several phases - some buildings are newer than others. The most unique are the original rooms - round cottages with thatched roofs. To really get a complete experience, request an original room. The most attractive thing about this resort is the atmosphere. The gounds are peaceful and beautiful, hidden among tropical ...Read More

Included in the price of your accomodations are three meals a day. Tico's restaurant provides a cafeteria style meal daily featuring Mexican and international cuisine. You don't have much choice if you do not like the food served on a particular night as there are no more than one or two main entree choices. We found that the food for the most part was pretty good. The highlight of the week is Mexican Night, where patrons are treated to authentic Mexican cuisine - it was excellent!!! Breakfast was wonderful as well - serving omlets, pancakes, bacon, and fruit each morning. The dining rooms are very pleasant, or you may choose to eat on a seaside patio if you wish. For the days when you are fishing...Read More

Attraction

On the morning of your fishing trip off the coast of Baja, you awaken early and enjoy a filling breakfast in the hotel's dining room. You chat with the other fishermen (or women) and make grand predictions about your success on the water today. You walk on over to the portable seaside dock and wait for your boat to approach. Once aboard you relax and absorb the breathtaking view of 'slick calm' waters against stretches of flowering desert and lush green hills. Above you, your Captain navigates the boat several miles to the fishing 'hot spots' while the deck hand sets out a drag line. About an hour or two after you set sail, the excitement begins. Every where you turn you see marlin dancing acros...Read More

Snorkeling at Iguana Bay Photo, Baja California, Mexico

On a day when we were not fishing, we decided to take a snorkeling tour to Iguana Bay - a small, secluded rocky area about an hour boat ride from the Palmas de Cortez resort. I cannot remember the name of the tour company, but we picked up a brochure at the front desk that was recommended by the attendant. We, along with 4 or 5 other people on the boat, enjoyed the beautiful countryside of lush mountains and flowering deserts. We were greeted by a couple of whales and manatees on our way as well. Before stopping at Iguana Bay, our guide took us to a colony of sea lions. Those who chose to do so were able to swim with the animals. This was a fun and exciting event, thought the smell of the animal...Read More

Story/Tip

Quote:
Palmas de Cortez is mainly a vacation spot for serious fishermen. However, for those who are not as interested in fishing, or for those who want to take a break from fishing, the hotel offers other activities as well. There are workout facilities, a large pool, jacuzzi, tennis and racquetball. The hotel can also arrange for scuba diving, windsurfing (in season), and horseback riding. There is a beach-side palapa bar where you can enjoy a potent Margarita while listening to Mexican musicians nearby.
