Secrets of Hong Kong

A March 1998 trip to Hong Kong by Kathy

I have been to Hong Kong 4 times in the past 10 years. I was there before 97 and after. Things didnt change that much. The Hong Harbor view still takes my breath away. Stop at the Regent Hotel, they have floor to ceiling windows with a view of the harbor. Go for a drink at night its a great sight,we went in March 1998 and didn't get digital camera until June 1998, so I don't have pictures to put in this journal.

Please note the pictures that are in this journal are not mine, they are from another travel website. I didn't have a digital camera in 1998. I have added the pictures in 2005. Watch the afternoon sun turn the city to gold aboard an authentic Chinese junk boat. And at sunset, a cocktail or dinner cruise offers a memorable way to watch the city lights begin their seductive dance on the waters of Victoria Harbor. It's an unforgettable experience you'll want to share. Value and variety are the hallmarks of any shopping spree through the city's outdoor street markets, malls and upscale shops. You'll find VIP discounts and great buys on designer and hand-tailored clothing not to mention a wide range of products. I still like Stanley Market and the Night Markets. Highlights of Hong Kong star ferry ride, Stanley Market and the Tram to the top of the Peak.

Quick Tips:

Side trips to other islands are fun also. Lantau or some of the smaller islands. It''s fun to take the hovercraft also.

Best Way To Get Around:

Ferry and metro.

Hotel

If possible, ask for a room up higher and a harbor view. It didn't cost more and was worth it. We had a corner room with windows on 2 sides, 2 double beds, a small couch and table and a nice big bathroom. We had room 1208. The hotel is in a big shopping center so there are lots of places to eat. There is also a nice pool.

We stayed here in 95, so I can't verify the price. The best thing about this hotel is the location, and they had a super breakfast buffet. The downside, this is a modern new hotel but the rooms are very small.

Restaurant

This is a great place for lunch or happy hour. Since it's right next to the tailor we spent a lot of time drinking beer here, waiting for our suits to be fitted, made etc. Good selection of beers.

Restaurant

This was an Irish Bar. They had Guinness and also Kilkenny beer. (Kilkenny is like Guinness but a little lighter and it's hard to find.) Lunch for 3 was 552.00 HKD (divide by 7 to get cost in US). WE had each a pint. An appetizer split and 1 steak sandwich, one salmon connemara and a salmon Boxty. A boxty is similar to a crepe but thicker like a pancake.

Don't be fooled by the name of this is a Chinese restaurant, specializing in Peking Food.

The service is excellent and we ate there 2 times and both were excellent. They have a very good selection. It's hard to decide

Restaurant

I think this is a chain restaurant from Chicago. We were tired that night and didn't feel like anything strenuous. The food is typical and staying at the Marriott, it was convenient.

Attraction | "Stanley Market"

This is a great market. Better than the night market. Watch what you buy- my friend bought FILA stuff and it fell apart. I got a nice wheeled carry-on bag for about 25.00. It lasted for 5 years. I went back and couldn't find the same brand so I got another one but the wheels fell off after one use.

They don't bargain a lot here but it's really a lot of fun. Take the bus up. Sometimes I have so much, I don't want to take the bus back so I take a taxi.

This is a fun market and the merchants will bargain. Lots of the stuff is crap. But I got a real nice tote bag for $5.00 and some UMBRO shorts for a real good price (watch the sizes). They have some food stalls, and it smelled good, but we had just eaten, so we didn't have any food. This is just a fun evening in which you won't need to spend a fortune.

Attraction

I love a ride on the STAR FERRY. You must go in the day and night and the upper deck and lower deck. The signs say watch for pickpockets but we had no problems.

Note they have restrooms in the Docks of ferries but they are very nasty (bring toilet paper). We found the best toilets at the fancy hotels.

Attraction

We went in 1995 and we were happy with the suits we got made here so in 98 we went back and weren't disappointed. Sam is very talkative and will offer a beer while you are there getting fitted. If you get a suit made you can talk them into 4-5 shirts at a discount. I have blouses that I still get compliments on, years later.

Attraction | "The Peak"

Take the tram up to the peak on a nice clear day, I have never done it at night but it's supposed to be spectactular.

There are a lot of shops and restaurants up there also. They are rather overpriced.
