Marvelous Maui

A January 2002 trip to Maui by Fula97

Unbelievable locale. I wasn't very impressed with O'ahu and wondered why I had traveled 13 hours, but then I landed in Maui for the second part of my trip and it was worth it.

Overview

Iao Valley Park
Walking on the beach and seeing whales in the distance. Shaking in my shoes as I slowly drive my car around the curves on the Road to Hana.

Quick Tips:

I would suggest you take a boating cruise to see whales or for the sheer pleasure of it. Also, don't go alone. Hawaii is geared heavily towards families and couples. I travel alone quite often, but it was very noticeable on this trip since everyone was in pairs and at the bars, clubs, etc., everyone is mostly paired up and into each other. If you are on a budget or going with a group, I would look into a renting a condo, since Hawaii is full of them and it may come out cheaper. Also, before going on hikes, etc., all day, I went to the nearby Costco/Walmart to stock up on drinks and snacks, since they can get pricey.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around is by car.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & SpaBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Hyatt Regency"

I loved this hotel. Private lanai (balcony), nice simple furnishings, and a great spa. Since you are paying dearly for this hotel, try and stay in a Regency Club room for additional amenities such as breakfast, cocktails, and snacks. While there were quite a few families, there was adequate and attentive staff, and there just seemed to be an endless amount of calm and tranquility throughout the resort.

Aloha Mixed PlateBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

This was great, inexpensive, good food. There are a several dishes to choose from. Try the mixed plate so you can try several different dishes (chicken, beef, and fish). A mixed plate runs around $8 for a mixed plate. All of the plates come with a scoop of macaroni salad and two scoops of rice. If the thought of ordering a mixed plate is too overwhelming, you can also order á la carte. You can also order standard fare such as burgers. For less than $10 you can get a great and filling meal with a great view of the ocean. I have fond memories of watching the ice-skating Olympics and yelling at the screen when Michelle Kwan didn't take the gold.

Attraction

This was great simply to race along the water and feel the wind and surf againest your face. If you want to snorkel or dive, this is not the boat for you. Snacks are provided.
