Oahu - Commercial but Relaxing

A January 2002 trip to Oahu by Fula97

Oahu, while a bit too commercial for my taste, was still a sight to see, full of great beaches and great food. There are things to do and see beyond your resort if you are willing to explore

Standing on the USS Missouri
You have to see Pearl Harbour. I would also recommend you visit the USS Missouri. I was fortuate to attend a private function on the ship and was able to see parts of the ship that is usually off limits to visitors. Also, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn more about their heritage

Quick Tips:

While Oahu can be very expensive there are several ways to save money. I loved those sarongs and skirts with there bright vibrant colors but disliked the price of even a simple shift. I went to a large fabric store on the island and purchased several yards of materials to make simple sarongs for myself and friends.

Also, for drinks and snacks, I would go to a neighborhood ABC store since it is often cheaper. Or go to Costco and get bulk water and snacks for the day.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can walk to quite a few places, but I would suggest a car to get to the more remote locations. Keep in mind that while we complain about gas on the mainland be prepared for sticker shock since they were paying close to a gallon 2 years ago when we were paying less.

Slumbering City
If you have children, I would recommend this hotel since there are a lot of activities for them. If you don't have children or are looking for more attention, this might not be the best place for you as there are quite a few children around and the wait staff is not as attentive because of the number of people.

Also, for drinks and snacks, I would go to a neighborhood ABC store since it is often cheaper. Or go to Costco and get bulk water and snacks for the day. I stayed in the Kalia Tower, which was recently built and is geared toward more upscale stays and business travelers. The room was spacious and tastefully decorated. This tower also contains its own check-in for its guests. The rooms were what you would expect in any hotel for business travelers. Two phone lines a large desk to work. This tower also contained the Mandara Spa, which is a full service salon/spa and gym.

The Ali'i tower is the luxury tower with more luxurious furnishings as well as additional amenities such as free continental breakfast, turndown service, three phones instead of the normal two, and a private fitness center.

This property also has 10 restaurants on site ranging from causal to very upscale Bali by the Sea is a must sea. If you have children this is a great hotel since they have tons of activities onsite for them to partake in such as arts and crafts, swimming etc. You can also watch the penguins at the hotel, which seems to be a staple at all major hotels (I confess I don't get it). If you never want to leave the resort you can also shop here ranging from Hawaiian crafts to the latest Louis Vuitton bag.

Volcano Desert
This was one of the best restaurants ever. The food was sublime with lovely presentation. The staff provided great service. If you are looking for a romantic dinner, this should be on your list, as it overlooks the ocean. You have to have the volcano chocolate dessert.
