An April 2003 trip to Liverpool by Jehcekah

Ever since I was in high school and I became infatuated with John Lennon, I have wanted to visit Liverpool. Of course, I never thought that I would, but in April of 2003, I found myself in the Magical Mystery Tour Bus touring The Beatles sights!

Britannia Adelphi Hotel
We were very fortunate to get a very good deal on our room through a booking site last minute. I think we paid about 40 pounds for a standard room with no breakfast. When we checked in, we discovered how posh our room really was. The bedroom was huge and the ensuite bathroom was enormous with a jacuzzi tub!! What a treat!

The hotel was a place where wealthy guests who were travelling on the luxury ships would stay in the early 20th century. Think Titanic! The hotel lobby is gorgeous and you immediately feel transported back to the time of Jack and Rose when you enter it. We did not eat on the property nor did we use any room service. There are suites in the hotel, but I would imagine that they are quite expensive.

Attraction | "The Beatles Story Museum"

Beatles Story
Mecca for the Beatles Fan! This museum is chock full of Beatles history and items. From John Lennon’s white piano to guitars, the cavern club and a life-sized yellow submarine, this place has everything to satisfy a hungry Beatles fan! When we were there, they were showcasing a special exhibit with John's yellow glasses on display. . . how cool!

There is a gift shop to the museum, which features extremely high-priced Beatles souvenirs. I think the admission price was $10 per person, but we had printed a coupon off of their website, which doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Hours: 10am-6pm (April-Sept), 10am-5pm (Oct-March). Open seven days a week. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Beatles Magical Mystery TourBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Magical Mystery Tour"

Magical Mystery Tour
Ride along in a replica of the famous Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour bus as a guide narrates you to the childhood homes of the Beatles and the places where many of their songs were inspired.

Places to see on the tour:
Strawberry Fields
Penny Lane
Beatles’ homes
Beatles’ schools
Where John and Paul met
Cavern Club

Our tour guide was especially knowledgeable and quite funny too. We had a special treat when we went to Paul McCartney's childhood home. The guy who maintains the home happens to look just like Paul, so we snapped a photo a fooled all of our friends into thinking that we had met him!! Ha ha!

Address: Meets at the Visitor Center at Albert Dock

Liverpool Anglican CathedralBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Liverpool Cathedral"

Liverpool Cathedral
Phone: 0151 702 7217 (direct)
Website: http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk
Email: lew.eccleshall@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk
Hours: Open every day of the year from 8am-6pm -- (Christmas Day until 2pm)
Admission: A donation of £3 per person (4€; US$4) is suggested, but admission is free

The cathedral is not quite as old as other Anglican cathedrals in England; it was built in 1904. You can certainly see its more modern touches, but it adds to its uniqueness. It is reportedly the largest Anglican cathedral in England and has the largest working church organ in the world. Volunteer guides are available to lead tours around the building or you may take a leaflet, which gives a very good outline of what there is to see.

There is a large gift shop on the site. They sell Liverpool souvenirs and also general religious items for sale.

Attraction | "Other Beatles Sights"

Yellow Sub
There are many other Beatles sights in Liverpool that the tour does not take you to. One of them is the large yellow submarine, which is across the street from Albert Dock. The piece was erected in memory of the Beatles' song (and movie) about the "Yellow Submarine."

Made famous by the Beatles, the Cavern Club is still operating today. The Magical Mystery tour ends in the re-made club, which is modeled to look just like the club where the Beatles performed in the 1960's. You can buy a drink and sit and soak in the atmosphere or watch some live performances in the evenings.

Across the alley from the Cavern Club is the Cavern Pub. The pub houses many Beatles artifacts, such as some of their guitars. We popped over for a beer and cider and sat and relaxing while looking at all of the Beatles memorabilia.
