The Barn, Marahau, is advertised as the closest accommodation to the Abel Tasman Park. As far as we could see, this is true. They only take phone bookings – we asked for a triple ROOM; when we arrived, it was a tepee. I can’t complain about it – it was clean and adequate. No bedtime reading though, unless you have a powerful torch.
That evening we strolled around the various trails in Marahau – through marshlands and forests. We took shelter from the mosquitoes in Park Café. That was an experience; a Gypsy/Celtic band were playing, so it attracted lots of hippy-trippy types. The food looked delicious, and they also do packed lunches for trampers.
