Southern California

A February 2004 trip to San Diego by whiterock

This was not our first trip to California, but it was our first to the San Diego area. We found the weather great, and there are many varied things to do. We will go back again!

We stayed inland, but did do many things, including visiting Oceanside, Carlsbad, Leucadia, San Marcos, the San Diego Zoo, Seaport Village, Balboa Park, Julian (2003 wildfire area), Temecula (wine country), Rancho Mirage, and La Quinta.

Quick Tips:

One should not visit this area without taking in a day each at the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is a must. Don't stick to the major highways (I5 and I15), but venture off on the secondary routes.

Best Things Nearby:
Live theater on the resort, three golf courses, Old California Restaurant Row, Temecula wine country, San Diego Zoo, Balboa park, Seaport Village, Coronado Island, Oceanside, and Harrah's Casino on Rin Con reservation.

Best Things About the Resort:
The accommodation was superb, and the location and spaciousness of the entire resort were second to none.

Resort Experience:
Welk Resort Villas Resort is just north of Escondido and about 45 minutes from downtown San Diego. The resort is on 600 acres in a valley just east of Interstate 15.

There is room, room, and more room. The villas are located in three primary areas: Melody Hill, Harmony Hill, and Broadway Hill. Other accommodation includes Villas on The Green, which is more of a hotel/condo arrangement. There are two golf courses on the resort, an executive 18- and a nine-hole par 3. Both are well maintained. Included in the resort complex is Champagne Village, a retirement community of double wides that are very well maintained and landscaped.

We had a two-bedroom villa that was 1370 square feet! It was very well laid out, well equipped, and overlooked a water hazard (fishing lake) by the ninth green of the Fountains golf course. All villas have a name associated with them. Ours was Laura and the building next to us was Sonata (notice the Welk connection with all the names).
