The Inca Ruins of "El Fuerte"

A September 2000 trip to Samaipata by Gary

An archaeological site from about the 12th Century, carved from the red sandstone bedrock on top a mountain 4 KM from the village of Samaipata, Bolivia.

Spend a half-day at the site of the ruins, examining the artistic details, then have a cold Pacena beer with lunch in one of the local cafes around the plaza in Samaipata. Walk the streets and visit the handicraft shops, and just let the world go by.

Quick Tips:

Samaipata is 120 KM southwest of Santa Cruz and can be reached (on paved road) in about 2 hours by taxi, rental car, or tourist services micro-bus. This is a good 'day'trip from Santa Cruz, but can be easily extended to several days if you want to take in some of the ecological sights of the Amboro National Park, or the historic 'La Pajcha' nearby which is the place of the capture and execution of Che Gueverra. Accommodations in Samaipata are very comfortable, and the weather is good year-around (6,000 feet elevation).
