The Surf Coast

Overview

Quote:
Great surf beaches around the area, including Bells Beach, Jan Juc, Anglesea, and Fairhaven.

Quick Tips:

Take a day trip along the Great Ocean Road to see the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, and London Bridge (now no longer a bridge!).

Best Way To Get Around:

By car seems to be the only way! There are buses that connect with the train at Geelong, but they probably won't get you much further than Torquay. Without a car, you would be pretty much stuck in the resort. It’s a nice resort, but the beaches are what make this area famous!

Best Things Nearby:Surf beaches! The closest beach is Bells Beach, but this is out of my league! Better propositions were Jan Juc, Anglesea, and Fairhaven.Best Things About the Resort:Great for families, with a collection of animals to keep the kids’ interest. The large indoor pool was great. This can be a hard area to find accommodation at the right price and Bellbrae is close to some really great beaches.Resort Experience:This was once a health resort, so the units are a mix of older hotel-style units and new family villas. The family villas are great. We have stayed in them on earlier visits. All units have a full kitchen and there are communal barbecues co...Read More

We decided that we had enough of grilling meat on the barbie and looked for somewhere cheap and easy to get to. The Golf Club has a bistro offering reasonably priced meals and good service. It was typical pub/club food, but tasty nonetheless. It was also quieter than the Torquay pub, although the food there was also reasonably priced.

Fairhaven

Attraction

We drove down the coast looking for two things: good waves and a parking space. Both came together at Fairhaven and we spent most of one day alternating between thawing out in the sun and body surfing. The waves were good and the beach was clean. We even took the opportunity to walk along the beach and gaze up at the magnificent houses along the Great Ocean Road looking over the beach. You must see the house on one concrete pillar, an impressive engineering feat!

The natural beauty in this area is awe-inspiring. From the 12 Apostles (someone can't count!) through to the Loch Ard Gorge and the Arch, this area has some magnificent scenery. If you stay at Bellbrae, a tour along the Great Ocean Road is a must. You need to set aside a day, but it is well worth the effort. Don't forget your camera! The bakery in Port Campbell serves good coffee, cakes, and pies – it’s a better option than the tourist facilities, which tend to be overpriced.

Surf Dive and Ski

Attraction

All the Australian surf brands are represented in the factory outlets in Torquay. Surf Dive and Ski, Billabong, and Roxy outlets are here. You can buy surf clothing and accessories, body boards, and surf boards. Prices are usually a little cheaper than usual, but the main advantage is being able to see all the name brands in one area. The kids love it. The banks love it! The parents melt their plastic. My children still travel down on weekends via train and bus just to top up their wardrobes!
