Calistoga - the northern california spa town

A January 1997 trip to Calistoga by Travel Queen

Calistoga is a quaint little town that prides itself for the mud baths, massages and spa atmosphere. It's in the heart of California's wine country.

We each had a full body massage at the Calistoga Inn and Spa. It was a modern facility (not all of them are), and I had a great masseusse.

Quick Tips:

We stayed in the same resort as where the spa was.

Best Way To Get Around:

driving a car is best
The motel was older but clean. It wasn't luxurious. The actual spa building was much newer. There was a bizarre air raid signal that went off dead in the middle of the night. It was right after a lot of flooding in the wine country and we woke up from our sleep and thought maybe they were evacuating the town. We called 911 since there was no activity at our motel. We learned the siren was for a volunteer fire dept to come together for a medical emergency. This gives you an idea how small Calistoga is.

Restaurant

We ate at an informal restaurant on the main drag. I'll type the name in once I find out what it was called. The food was good and the place was busy.

Napa Wine TrainBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

I have yet to do this but I read and hear from friends rave reviews about the food on this infamous Wine Train. Yes it's a little pricey but from what I hear it's worth it. Next time I go to wine country I'm doing this!

Antique ShoppingBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Calistoga and Napa are have a lot of cute little shops for antique shopping. They also have a certain amount of craft shops to check out.
Check this one out. It costs $6 to see this real active geyser. It's on the main drag also and I believe there's a public pool that's heated by the geyser water. Pretty neat.
