A March 2004 trip to Cornwall by wutzl2

A week exploring the towns and villages in rural Cornwall, UK.

  • 6 reviews
Visiting the small fishing villages along the coast, shopping in local stores, dining in neighborhood pubs and tearooms, walking the coastal footpath, visiting local historic areas.

Quick Tips:

Wear comfortable clothing and good walking shoes.
Invest in area maps. Many villages are not on the major motorway maps.
Pick up local papers for community events.
Ask locals about the area and points of interest.

Best Way To Get Around:

Despite adequate train service in the UK, a car is a must in this area. Have coinage available, as parking permits require change. Walking is mandatory in many areas and much of this part of country is not handicapped-accessible.
Best Things Nearby:
Eden Project, Fowey (a small medieval fishing village), Truro Cathedral, Coastal Footpath, Wheal Martin, local gardens, villages and pubs

Best Things About the Resort:
Clean well-equipped cottages, friendly knowledgeable staff, pool and health spa, spacious lounge and bar area.

Resort Experience:
Trenython Manor is just that. A former manor house designed by Garibaldi and once owned by the bishop of Truro. The Italianate influence is unmistakable and the inn itself is quite grand. The cottages are well designed, have patios and views. This is a new resort and is still finding its way. They are a bit formal and really not suited to young children. However, the resort seems to work for both those wanting a pampered spa experience and those wishing to relax and tour, and it is possible to do both.

This is a fun activity for the fit. Interesting sights, locals. The path follows the coast of Cornwall and the views can be breathtaking. The photo ops are numerous.

Try the hikes in all types of weather for the full experience.

Attraction

This is a biosphere developed in an abandoned clay pit consisting of, at present, two temperature controlled biomes, extensive outdoor plantings, and construction of a third enclosed biome. Plantings representative of humid tropics through warm temperate zones are available for viewing as well as seasonal outside flowers and vegetables. This is an enjoyable half-day activity.

Attraction

This area of Cornwall has been famous for its fine china clay. Wheal Martyn is a museum located in two old china clay works, Wheal Martyn and Gomm. The historic trail uncovers the secrets of the Wheal Martyn Clay Works in the late 10th century and the trail winds through an area affected in the past by the extractive nature of this industry. There is a trail to view a modern working clay pit as well. Clay mining remains a viable industry even today.

Attraction | "The ancient town of Fowey"

The ancient town of Fowey (pronounced FOY) is located off of A3072 – it’s a delightful old fishing town built into the side of a hill. You will find the requisite narrow winding streets, a fine old church, various shops and eateries, an old abandoned castle, a beach, and very friendly people. Take the ferry to Poluran across the river to stroll through even narrower streets and visit an even older church.

Parking space is very limited, and there is much walking and climbing. Walk part of the coastal path and take in the views from the headlands. You can also take a car ferry across the river to explore even further.
