The DuPont family arrived just after the American Revolution and soon began making gunpowder, the original foundation of their great fortune. Today, many of the mansions and gardens belonging to this prolific French family are open to the public. More recently Wilmington's riverfront has enjoyed a magnificent upfit and many restaurants, clubs, and galleries now line the shore. Quick Tips: Wilmington makes a great overnight stop on the way south down the East Coast thanks to its location near the junction of I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
