Watching the seasons in Wilmington

Best Of IgoUgo

Overview

Quote:
Hiking around Mount Snow in summer. Skiing Mount Snow in winter. Watching the leaves change in autumn. Relaxing in one of the many fine B&B's. Looking for antiques in nearby Newfane & Townshend. Shopping in Brattleboro.

Quick Tips:

Book accommodation well in advance over ski season & especially during 'leaf peeping' season. Be prepared to kick back & relax - this is not a 24 hour party place!

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving or the great free bus service - the 'Moo-ver' - the bus that looks like a cow & moos like a cow!

This is a really beautiful, romantic inn with nicely furnished rooms - ours had a wood burning fireplace. It is located in the middle of nowhere - so it's name is very apt - the peace & quiet is lovely when you're used to living in New York City. The living room has a huge fire & comfortable sofas for guests to lounge on - magazines, newspapers, chocolates & fruit are in huge supply. A sumptuous breakfast is served at big tables - where guests are encouraged to interact - in the dining area. They also have a very friendly dog!

This is a great B&B very close to the slopes of Mount Snow & a drive away from Wilmington - it's a perfect place to stay in winter. The huge living area is highlighted with antiques & a big roaring fire, & a soothing mood is set with classical music. There is also a pool table, board games & plenty of magazines. We stayed in their most basic room (we booked last minute) which wasn't great - but I saw other rooms & they looked lovely - filled with antiques & pretty floral patterns. Breakfast was hearty & served late - which is always appreciated, as were the afternoon home baked cookies & hot chocolate.

Le Petit Chef

Restaurant

We were expecting simple food in a simple setting at reasonable prices - but we were in for a surprise! The decor is a hotch potch of New England vs French cafe & doesn't go well together, the food is creative - some may say over ambitious for Wilmington - lots of creamy sauces & mixed flavours, the diners are local people out on special occassions & dressed up way beyond the means of the restaurant, the waiting staff are local girls doing weekend jobs who are pleasant enough but know nothing about the menu & the prices are ridiculously high bearing in mind all of the above!

This is a great little restarant/bar right in the centre of Wilmington - sit at the bar & drink their delicious home brewed beer (you can see the barrels in the back room) or sit in the restaurant & enjoy simple but good food.

This was my first time trying cross- country skiing & snow shoeing & it was great! Mixed levels of varied terrain winded through a wooded area - which was peaceful & very pretty.

I would strongly avoid Mount Snow for down hill skiing - the lines are long, the lifts insufficient & the snow not that great (unless you happen to be really lucky!)Instead opt for x country skiing - there are many great facilities in the surrounding area.
