Port Antonio Bliss

An April 2000 trip to Port Antonio by Suzy R

Quote: Jamaica has a great vibe, a distinct personality and a rich cultural heritage. It also has splendid beaches, rainforests, and lush green mountains. I love the reggae music wafting through the air like a soundtrack.

Owned by Maria Carla, an Italian journalist, Drapers San is a funky little guest house with simple but comfy rooms. Bobo, her Jamaican boyfriend, is a great cook should you choose to dine there. There are three rooms in the main house and a separate unit with two bedrooms and a living room. Some rooms include the use of a kitchenette. There is a pleasant garden to hang out in with a lovely hammock that everyone fights over. The drawbacks are that some of the rooms can be a little noisy (sounds off the main road, chickens in the garden next door). Also bear in mind that the guest house is a very intimate experience, you can only hope that your fellow guests are as cool as ours were.

One of the most luxurious and expensive on the island, Trident is fantastic. Rolling green lawns overlooking the sea, peacocks strolling past, a small private beach, sumptuous suites. Very glam, very, very nice indeed. Spring for if you're pockets are deep, it is worth every penny. Mick Jagger, Liz Taylor and Micheal Jackson have slept here. When we were there, fashion photographer Ellen Von Unwerth was too.
