Scare in the Black Hills

A March 2004 trip to Terry Peak by asplunddan

A pleasure trip for skiing became a scare of a lifetime. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a steep, ice-covered road. While attempting to climb, the van could no longer proceed and almost slipped off the edge of the road.

The view of the Terry Peak ski resort was great, along with simply driving down from the resort and immediately skiing. There’s no long drive to get to the mountain and return.

Quick Tips:

Caution should be used in attempting climbing the steep grade into resort if conditions appear slick or the vehicle may slide off the road over the edge.

Best Way To Get Around:

Spring conditions in the Black Hills of SD can change rapidly. A four-wheel drive vehicle would be preferred.

Our loft was huge with a king size bed and 3/4 bathroom. The kitchen was small. The lower bedrooms were small and you could barely walk around bed. The living room and dining area were combined, but adequate in size. Overall, the unit was cozy, but not roomy.

Spring conditions can vary from icy to slushy. March temperatures were 22 degrees F to 50 degrees F. If you're looking for powder skiing, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a family friendly ski area to learn and explore at a beginner or lower intermediate level, this ski area fits the bill.
