San Antonio, Austin & The Hill Country

A February 2004 trip to Texas by APLA-Rover

A 12 day getaway from our Canadian winter to see and enjoy some of the sights of this part of Texas and visit a dude ranch while there as well. We also got to taste some Texas wines, which was an enjoyable experience.

  • 20 reviews
Some of the things we enjoyed most were our dude ranch visit, Natural Bridge Caverns, the market in Wimberley, the shops in Gruene and touring The Hill Country.

Quick Tips:

Stay in hotels in the Riverwalk area to save on accommodations, as trolley and river taxi service is handy and walking to downtown is only 10 minutes.

Tasting and buying your wines at the wineries will save you - per bottle over buying in the many wine shops in the towns, although you get to taste several wineries’ products at once in many of the shops. Visit late March or later to really get the enjoyment of the spring - flowers and new foliage on the trees which were just beginning to show when we left mid-March. Visit dude ranches April or later when they are busier and offer a fuller array of activities, etc.

Best Way To Get Around:

You don't need a car in San Antonio if you are staying near, or right in, the Riverwalk area, as the 5 VIA Trolleys routes are cheap and efficient for getting around to all the major attractions. There are also river taxis and the walk from the hotels in Riverwalk north to the downtown core is an easy 10 minutes.

The rooms were large and comfortable with cable/games/movies available on the TV and coffee maker, iron, and hair dryer provided. The bathroom fixtures needed updating in the rooms we stayed in for our two visits, but were acceptable.

The hotel was undergoing some renovations during our stays, which did not interfere with our enjoyment of the hotel. The hotel has a pool, fitness room, restaurant and bar, and gift shop.

The trolley stops right outside the hotel and the Riverwalk is steps away from the front door as well. The rate charged ($80) was $5 less than quoted at reservation time. It’s a great deal so close to the main Riverwalk area. The staff was really helpful with dining suggestions, directions, etc.

Hotel | "Sheraton 4 Points Austin"

Rooms had TV/games/movies, hair dryer, iron, coffee maker, and refrigerator. Pool and fitness centre. Lounge and restaurant. Rooms were not large, but otherwise well appointed and comfortable. The restaurant served a good breakfast buffet for just $5.99. Easy access to the interstate and only a few minutes to the downtown attractions.

Sheraton Austin Hotel

The accommodations are very rustic, but very comfortable with some unique pieces of furniture. There’s a king bed, a wood-burning fireplace, a small bathroom with shower stall only and small sink, but no TV, hair dryer, or other amenities in the rooms. A TV/phone, etc. are located in the main ranch house common room.

There are three meals a day of family-style home cooking, which we enjoyed. We took two horseback rides a day. There were campfires with marshmallows and country music and other activities in the evenings. There was also a pool and other activities such as hiking, horseshoes, etc. The staff was very friendly. You can be as active or lazy as you want. The ranch is a 10-minute drive from Bandera, "the Cowboy Capital of the World". Everything but taxes and gratuity are included in daily rate of $100 per person (for a double room). The place is not licensed, but BYOB allowed and they'll supply wine glasses. No pets.

Black's BBQBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Black's Barbecue"

Advertised as the oldest BBQ in Texas and supposedly one of the best; however, our experience would rate it one of the poorest. Texans we met said we should have hit Smitty's or Kreuz's also in Lockhart. The sausages were dry like a pepperoni and not flavourful. The pork was tender but also very dry. The ribs weren't bad, but if you are looking for sauce, they don't serve it. The sides were supermarket-style coleslaw and potato salad and some overcooked vegetables and tough corn on the cob, etc. Sure a letdown when you have had great BBQ before and expect something special from this place that is touted in all the tourist brochures.

Texas Land & Cattle Steak HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Texas Land and Cattle Company"

We enjoyed our meal. Our steaks were done the way we ordered them and were tender and tasty. Service was attentive. Reasonable wine selection by the glass and bottle. Can be up to an hour or more wait for a table at peak times, and they don't have pagers, so you have to wait nearby to hear your name called. Restaurant is large and busy, but the dining experience is still enjoyable. Menu selections to meet all tastes, but stressing steak and Texas meat dishes. Right on the Riverwalk.

We visited only for breakfast, so I can't comment on the need for reservations at other times. A good selection of Mexican breakfast dishes. We had Huevos a la Mexicana & Chilaquiles Famosos and enjoyed them both. They have a good bakery on site where we picked up some great cookies for a snack later.

Van's Chinese Seafood RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Van's "

Near the Zoo & Witte Museum, so a little out of the way. Recommended by the bell captain as better and cheaper than the Asian restaurants on the Riverwalk, and he was right.

The spring rolls were a bit salty but otherwise very good. The Moo Shu Pork was some of the best we have ever had. The pancakes are large and they served too bowls of Hoisin sauce. You have to almost beg for it in many restaurants. The shrimp special for the evening was also very tasty, large fresh shrimp in a slightly spiced sauce.

The restaurant also serves Sushi and from the Japanese patrons there it must be good as well. They also operate a Vietnamese restaurant right next door. One surprise for an Asian restaurant is the huge wine selection. A wine lovers delight dozens to choose from in a wide range of prices.

Restaurant

An hour’s wait at dinner hour on a Friday evening. Pagers provided so you can wait outside. Restaurant is busy but still an enjoyable dining experience. We enjoyed 3 Cheese Ravioli with meat sauce and the Sausage & Pepper Rustico for out main courses. The Caesar salad is fair for a chain restaurant salad. They were offering free wine tastings while you were waiting for your table. They offered over 40 wines from cheap to middle-of-the-road from around the world. A couple were quite nice; the Penfold's Thomas Hyland Shiraz and the Frei Brothers Pinot Noir were quite enjoyable. Most are available by the glass as well. They will let you start a bottle while waiting for your table and bring it to the table and add it to the bill so you only have one transaction during your visit. Good value dining, especially for families and the budget conscious.

My wife said the Quiche de Jour was the best quiche she has ever eaten. The chicken was very good with a large serving of chicken. A varied menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and quiches and, as the name implies, tea. The place was busy with tourists as well as locals enjoying lunch after church and some women celebrating a birthday. Staff were attentive and service was good. Pleasant surroundings to relax and enjoy a midday pause or a quick cuppa and some dessert.

A local favourite by the large lunch time crowd and obviously a meeting spot as well. Does a lot of take out also.

The daily special was a large brisket plate with refried beans, coleslaw and potatoes. The serving of meat was huge, very tender and tasty. Breakfast is served all day and my wife was served a huge one. With beverages everything was under $15.

Gives you a taste and feel of the real down home smalltown Texas. If you are visiting the Mission Espada or the Promised Land dairy then this place is close by in Floresville.

Dolores Del RioBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Delores del Rio Restorante"

A low-ceilinged room with an eclectic decor including artwork by Armando Sanchez for sale. There was a combo playing a very enjoyable array of music which was not intrusive and added to your dining experience. The food was very good, we enjoyed veal marsala and meat ravioli as our main courses. The Caesar salad was excellent and my wife loved the to-die-for chocolate dessert of the evening. A fairly good wine selection is available by the glass or bottle. Using the washrooms is an experience, as you must walk through the kitchen to reach them. We felt the food was very good but a bit pricey. Only about ten tables and quite crowded, so this is not intimate dining but good food and attentive service.

A small cafe/bakery in the Sheraton Gunter hotel with an entrance directly of Houston St.

The daily special was a Cobb Salad and beverage for $6.99. It was so big it would have fed two people. It was all I could do to finish it. It sure was tasty. My wife really enjoyed an large sandwich on homemade multi-grain bread.

A small casual little place to grab a quick lunch or mid-day treat. They have pastries and othe goodies available also. A great value spot for families or the budget conscious.

Although the food was okay, this was the worst dining experience of our vacation. I don't believe we have ever eaten in a noisier restaurant in our lives, including the usually noisy food markets and restaurants of Asia and the East Side Mario's change. My wife enjoyed crab cakes and I had a baked fish special with a cup of gumbo. Food was okay, but nothing to write home about. Not worth going out of your way to find this place.

Cranky Frank's BBQBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

A small place with about 8 tables. The BBQ meat is sold by weight as in most of the BBQ restaurants, so you can make your order to size.

We enjoyed both the brisket and ribs washed down with a cold beer. The side dishes were the usual slaw, potato salad, beans. The slaw was quite good. This isn't fine dining and the decor is more like prison cafeteria but it was the best BBQ we had this trip to Texas. Recommended by a local.

An underground experience where you will see the actions of nature as it created these spectacular caves. The caves are a constant 70F degrees year round and very humid. Rubber soled shoes are recommended.

I would recommend trying to catch the first couple of tours of the day as they are often smaller and you will get a more personal narration. Our guide said some groups are over 50 people so those at the rear will have trouble hearing the commentary. The tour was 1 1/4 hours and remember you walk down a couple of hundred feet underground but you also have to walk back up so be prepared. Our photos taken in the cavern turned out quite well even with the low lighting and the camera flash.

Attraction

Call ahead for tour info. (830) 216-7182 ext. 104. We hadn't called ahead but joined a couple of school groups who were there and saw all the activities.

My wife was amazed at the suction power of a little calf when she was bottle-feeding him and tried to take the bottle back. Off came the top. The tour was informative for my 'city girl' wife who wasn't aware of how the milk was processed and bottled and also the differences in milk from an all Jersey cattle herd versus most other breeds.

They have a restaurant, gift shop and miniature golf course on sight. There is a charge for the food and milk bottles for feeding the animals. We were not asked to pay anything for our tour.

Held the first Saturday of each month from April thru December, with an extra day in March 2004. There is live entertainment, good food, no admission and cheap parking. Opens at 6:00A.M. and starts to close-up around 3:00 P.M.

Over 400 vendors selling a variety of goods too big to list. Excellent quality arts and crafts. Many unique items. A great way to spend a day; take a break when your feet get tired covering the 16 acre site and listen to the live entertainment. Visit the other shops in the village once the market starts to wind down. We were very impressed with the variety and quality of the goods offered.

Broken SpokeBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Broken Spoke Honky Tonk"

This is a great Texas Honky Tonk. There’s live country music Tuesday through Saturday; the entertainment starts at 9pm and it’s hard to get a table after 10. They feature everything from local bands to the big names in country like Jerry Jeff Walker and others. The cover charge varies from none to $10 the night we were there.

We joined a local couple at their table and enjoyed a great evening listening to some good country music, doing a little dancing, and just enjoying the great atmosphere of one of the best true Texas dance halls. A crowd from 21 to real oldsters was having a good ol’ time. Many people come alone or are in singles groups. Several regular old timers were having a great time dancing up a storm with ladies of all ages. This is not a "meat market", but just a great place for people to mix and mingle and have a fun evening.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was good and home-cooked, special but good value for the money. It was a fun place to visit.

The tour is taken in a military amphibian vehicle, which drives into Lake Austin and cruises around before returning to the starting point. The tour gives you the highlights of the central part of Austin and the duck quackers they give everyone to use as you tour around are fun. Kids will also enjoy the drive into the water. The tour itself was okay, but the canopy over the open vehicle was quite low and your view was often restricted; if you were on a full tour, you couldn't move around at all to get a view of certain sights. I would suggest that other than for the novelty factor, I would take one of the other tours available from the same location.
