Set in front of the Karwendelalp sits beautiful Innsbruck. Arrival by train is an easy entry and there are many very nice hotels in all price ranges. It is also a good starting-off point for many excursions into the mountains and the several wonderful valleys of Tyrol

Innsbruck
Of the several highlights one begins with the city. A stroll along Maria Theresia Strasse will introduce the visitor to the shopping street which connects directly with the old center of town and the famous Goldene Dachl (golden roof). Walk there under the arcades and enjoy the views of and from the City tower and see the municipal building from the 17th century

Quick Tips:

Listen to the local musicians who march along periodically in the old city, and look at the street paintings by the perennial artist. Enjoy fresh fruit from the sidewalk stand - but don't touch, only point at what you want or your head will be snapped off.

Best Way To Get Around:

This is a city strictly for walking. Taxis are reasonable but can only be found outside the old city center.
This was a wonderful place to stay; it was our second time there. This small hotel is located in the best possible location with a direct down-ward view of the Goldene Dachl, the City tower and all the performers in the square. The rooms are generous in size, well modernized with a modern bathroom. If you are lucky you can get room 401; it is the only one with a balcony which overlooks all the places mentioned above. People will look up at you with envy while you sit there enjoying a libation. At one point there was a wedding in the Municipal building, about 200 feet away, and the father of the bride asked if he could join us to take some pictures from the balcony. Of course we obliged.

Restaurant

There are three different dining rooms on the second floor, but all have the same kitchen. We sat mostly in the one frequented by the locals, since our fellow Americans were unduly noisy. The fare is well-prepared but like most Tyrolean food is rather on the heavy side. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it very much. The Wiener Schnitzel is big enough for two, maybe three.

Weinhaus Happ
Herzog Friedrich Strasse Innsbruck, Austria

This is a rather imposing Church and palace with much local Tyrolean and Austrian history attached. There are many statues of various emperors such as Albrecht II and his wife Elizabeth of Hungary. Emperor Friedrich III who was the father of Maximilian I and others, too many to mention. The building itself is very impressive with reticulated Gothic vaulting.

Karwendel Alp
There is a gentle and pleasant walk around the village of Hungerburg. There are a couple of restaurants for the visitor and gentle walking unless you want to stress yourself and go a bit higher. Of course you will see the souvenir shop at the Funicular station, but then you should go to the top if the weather is good. Be sure to bring a jacket and a sweater, it's usually quite cool at the top

Attraction | "Patscherkofl and Igls"

Take the bus from the R.R. station to Igls, a lovely sleepy little village much in favor by skiers. The town is located on a plateau and can be walked very easily. If you get an address to look someone up, expect trouble. The house numbers go every which way since they reflect the time the house was built not where it is located.. From here, take the cable car to near the top of the Patscherkofl which rises to about 6000 foot. The views here are nothing but spectacular. You look north at the whole Karwendelalp and up and down the Inn valley. It was here Andreas Hofer amd his men fought Napoleon's army.
