Weekend in San Miguel de Allende

A September 2003 trip to San Miguel de Allende by fresita

Quote: It's a historic kind of place; colonial-type archtecture and a lot of restaurants. Really close so that you can get into Guanajuato and visit some historical places or also visit the Guanajuato's dam or the Hidroelictric.

Weekend in San Miguel de Allende

Overview

When staying at San Miguel de Allende, don't forget to visit the Guanajuato "mummys" - over 50 mummys; they'll show you the "mummifying" process. This collection is about 100 years old. Also get into the "Alondiga de Granaditas" - that's an old prison were they used to have the war prisoners (caudillos) during the Independence; when they caught them they used to keep them prisoner for months, torture them, and finally cut their heads off and expose them at the "Alondiga" to let their enemies what will bw the price for challenge them. Best Things Nearby:It's close to downtown so it's in the middle of the action. You can take a walk around or about 3 blocks away you can go into the Mirador and take a look into the city.Best Things About the Resort:The onsite restaurant is great – good food, clean, and not that expensive. Some famous people (Cantinflas, Maria Felix) have stayed there!Resort Experience:Spacious. They're big units with living room area and a patio overlooking the city and the pool. It's the closest RCI resort to downtown. The bath is big as well, and a pretty big closet! The resort is very nice and very intimate, which means exclusivity. Since it's a small resort, it's cl...Read More

Besides the good taste of this restaurant where you can eat all kinds of Mexican food is the view that you get from the restaurant. You get a great view of the whole city - looks nicer at night - and the surroundings. It's a small place, family friendly; colonial decorated, very intimate.

Posada La Ermita is a well-known resort because it used to be one of the most luxurious resorts in the area (now there are some others) and was visited by a lot of famous people. Itl is an intimate resort; right next door from the resort, there's a Catholic church that sometime in September commemorate their saint, so they party all day long and the day after. During the celebration they do all kinds of pre-Hispanic dance, all kinds of "antojitos," fireworks, "piñatas," etc. At downtown right in front of the cathedral there's a man who sells ice cream, but he sells it on his horse-drawn carriage (a percheron). But the horse is very big. You can take pictures with the horse - it's amazing that a ...Read More
