Our most memorable activity was taking an automobile north from Silver City on Hwy 15. The road got very narrow and was slow traveling. It was well worth the trip to see where the Cave Dwellers lived. To get to it, we hiked up a winding mountain travel to a fairly high elevation. Realizing the Indians lived with their children high on the side of the mountain with a sheer drop was amazing. Seeing the area where Billy the Kid once roamed was very thought provoking. Fort Bayard and Buckhorn Saloon were also interesting.

Quick Tips:

Long, wide vehicles can not travel Hwy 15 to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is a must. We did not observe any public transportation.

Hotel | "Holiday Inn"

The Holiday Inn was maintained very well. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. There were ample parking spaces near the door to prevent walking very far. The continental breakfast had a nice variety, it was fresh and tasted very good. The staff were very polite and helpful.

The menu had a nice variety of Mexican and American food. We had various Mexican items from the menu; the food was good and it was warm. We were disappointed in taste of the food because we are accustomed to the seasoning of Mexican food in Houston, TX. The decor was nice and the restaurant was clean. Servers were prompt and courteous.

Gila Cave Dwelling
The drive to and from Gila Park went through some beautiful areas and had some spectacular sights and sheer drop from some cliffs. The climb up the mountain trail to the cliff dwellings was amazing. The view from the cliff dwellings was unbelievable--we could see far off and straight down. There was also quite a bit of wildlife to be seen. We saw some snow and ice on the mountains during the drive from Silver City.

Pinos Altos
Pinos Altos is in the Gila National Forest. The town began in 1860 when Thomas Birch, Colonel Snively and Hicks, stopped to for a drink in Bear Creek and discovered gold.

The main street of Pinos Altos looks like an old town seen in western movies. Many of the old buildings were constructed in the 1800's. The old buildings have been restored and decorated with original furnishings.

We also toured Fort Cobre (a 3/4 scale replica of Santa Rita Del Cobre Fort which was located just east of Silver City, NM), some museums (one is in a log cabin and was the first area school house) and other historical sites. Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House is really unique--it is decorated with memorabilia, including photographs, from the 1800s. Panning for gold was also fun.
