Berlin Bonanza

An August 2000 trip to Berlin by Lacy

The Illinois Humanities Council participated in a teacher exchange with Hamburg and Berlin, Germany this past summer. The Illinois group left Chicago for 9 days in Germany on Aug 23 and returned on Sept 1, 2000. For a baker's dozen of unknown and unfamiliar people, the 13 people gelled quickly into a cohesive band of renegades. Few spoke German, but all were willing to "seek and ye shall find" in their approach to sites and cities never before visited. The twin citiy visits were underscored with enhancements from the America House in both Berlin and Hamburg.

Overview

Sony Complex at Pottsdamer Platz, Berlin
Reichstaag, Berlin
SanSouci-Palaces of Frederick the Great
Cross country bus trip through East Germany
Hamburg Immigration Museum and Archives
St. Pauli Girl Brewery, Hamburg
St. Michael's Cathedral

Quick Tips:

1. Buy day passes on the Berlin S-ban and U-ban.
2. Don't take the tour, but do your own at San Souci. It's easy, and a day pass is only .00
3. Berlin has a once-a-year museum night---do attend if you are there during the last Saturday in August. It too is .00 and allows entry into 90 different museums with a street festival outside each museum. 6 p.m.-2 .a.m.
3. Walk to the top of the Reichstaag...the view is breath-taking
4. Buy the week pass for the Hamburg transit system. OR buy a ticket that allows five(5) to travel all day for .00.
5. Look into group theater tickets while in Hamburg. They were offering 'Cats' 5 tickets for .00 A much better deal than New York.
6. Do take a lake tour while in Hamburg as opposed to the river tour.
7. Don't forget to drink the wine. Buy plenty to bring home too. It is cheap and makes a great gift.

Best Way To Get Around:

We used nothing but public transportation. We were cautious to make sure we knew what time the systems shut down on each night.
Walking is a way of life in Germany so take good shoes and bring a spare pair of socks if extra cushoning is needed.
This is a business class hotel which offers a first rate location right outside the main train terminal in the eastern sector. It is within walking distance of the Museum Isle and other tourists sights. It is right behind the world famous Berliner Theater, Bertol Brecht's home theater. The rooms are for 1 or 2 and the hotel offers a truly hearty breakfast as part of the price.
