Lazing in Bonaire

A December 1999 trip to Bonaire by globe trotter

Quote: If you want a romantic getaway this is the perfect place - it has that great ability to please all types - i.e. you want to lie on the beach then go for a soothing body treatment but your partner would rather windsurf 'till the sun goes down!

The setting is lovely - there is a private beach & calm ocean steps away - & the food & service is good but the rooms are really overpriced for what you get. We moved rooms twice before being moderately happy with what we got - the bedrooms themselves are OK but the bathrooms are badly finished, tiny & old - no matter what class of room you have.

The spa & gym facilities are really the highlight of the resort - the spa is bright, new & breezy with interesting treatments - including European & local specialities.

I would highly recommend the 'Bonaire sea salt scrub' (before you start sunbathing!!)- the salt is taken from the island & it's one of the best exfoliaters I've ever tried. After a day in the sun go for one of their soothing after sun treatments - they're wonderful.

If you have any energy left - they run great aerobic classes (in Spanish) which guests are welcome to join.

Bonaire is a small island & can be driven around in half a day with adequate stops for lunch & photo opportunities. We hired a car, got a few rudimentary directions from our hotel & headed off - it's difficult to get lost!

You should go to the look out points in Washington Park - which has the highest land on the island & also check out a few of the salt flats where the flamingos gather to feed - it's one of the best sights to see them all take flight together just as the sun is setting.

The diving in Bonaire is rated very highly - which is one of the reasons we went there, however we went about a month after a major hurricane had ripped through the area & heard there was a lot a damage. Piles of dead coral was being washed up on the beach every day & beach erosion was evident - this didn't bode well for a great diving experience!

When we did eventually get to go diving it was not as good as we'd hoped but not terrible - we still saw some pretty reef fish, fans & coral. The dive operation here is top class - the boats & equipment are brand new & the instructors very proficient & the reef will mend over time!!
