Cuba for Americans

A September 2000 trip to Havana by shpano

Cuba is the most fascinating island in the Caribbean, hands down. And Americans should not be afraid to go...just don't mention it to Uncle Sam.

La Habana Vieja, the old city of Havana, is the most atmospheric place I've ever been. All your senses are almost continually engaged. From the crumbling but amazing Spanish colonial architecture to the mojitos (potent minty rum drinks), Cuba does not fail to hold your attention. However, there is also unbelievable hardship and any trip to Cuba is bound to be full of contradictions.

Quick Tips:

Ask the Cuba customs people not stamp your passport if you are American or travel to America often. If you choose to stay at a state-run hotel (any established hotel is run by the state, as opposed to casa particulares which are family run), definitely book your room through a travel agent. It will be much cheaper.

Hotel

The Hotel Plaza is a renovated, ornate colonial building that is triangle shaped. The rooms, while not extravagant, are very comfortable, with high ceilings, satellite TV, 24 hour hot water and A/C. The location can't be beat and the rooftop breakfast buffet is terrific.
