Vibrant Vancouver

A July 2003 trip to Vancouver by Dundee Scotty

Quote: My first visit to Vancouver to visit family who live in Richmond - what an amazing place! Breathtaking scenery, vibrant city with lots to see and do.

Vibrant Vancouver

Overview

Quote:
Don't miss the trip to the top of Grouse Mountain; the cable car journey up the mountain is awesome, and on a clear day you can see for miles. Once at the top there are a couple of restaurants, lumberjack show, bear enclosure and spectacular woodcarvings from tree trunks. If you are really fit you can walk up!! Or do the Grouse Grind (timed run up the mountain).

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to see the area is to have a car, as it gives you so much freedom to go further afield. We did a wonderful drive to Whistler, stopping at Horseshoe Bay for lunch on the way. We also took the ferry over to Vancouver Island (which shouldn't be missed).

Granville Island

Attraction

Quote:
Granville Island is a superb visitor attraction. It is home to specialty shops and a huge undercover market. The choice of eating places is endless, from diners, to lovely restaurants, to takeaway food. You will be entertained by all the street entertainers, singers, musicians, magicians, escapologists, etc. - there is always something going on. You can also take the little water taxis over to the other shore on English Bay, which is an experience in itself. It is a very busy area, though, so parking is a bit difficult, but if you are lucky you'll be able to grab a spot.

Good family fun but not for someone with fear of heights. The totems at the entrance to the bridge are great and a favourite photograph spot. The walk over the bridge is over before you know it, and at the other side you can follow the nature trails. Lovely scenery, looking down onto the river. Then you have the walk back over the bridge into the souvenir shop and cafe area. Prices were pretty reasonable, as was the entrance fee. You don't need more than an hour or two for this sight, so it's a good idea to do it on the way to Grouse Mountain.

A trip up Burnaby Mountain is recommended if you like spectacular scenery. Once at the top of the mountain, you can picnic or enjoy a meal at the restaurant. You can see right over the city, out to the ocean and across the little islands, see the mountains from close up and watch the sunset. We went up on a Thursday evening and were lucky enough to catch the Simon Fraser University pipe band holding their band practice. They are a World Champion pipe band and it was a privilege to sit and listen to them play without all the crowds of a Grade 1 pipe band competition. Only word to sum the whole experience up is “AWESOME.”

Grouse Mountain

Attraction

Choose a nice clear day for this sight. After an exciting cable car ride to the top of the mountain, you have a breathtaking panorama view of Vancouver and the islands beyond and on the other side, the Rocky Mountains. While at the top of the mountain, you have the choice of two or three restaurants, all serving great food at reasonable prices. You can wander around the woods and admire the 30-foot woodcarvings of animals, birds and workmen. You can take in the lumberjack show and see the bears. There are also helicopter rides from the top of the mountain. If you are really athletic, there is the Grouse Grind, which is a run up the mountain -- a bit too energetic for me, but my nephew has done i...Read More
