A February 2004 trip

Clean studio-type hotel room. There are one- and two-bedroom timeshares as well, I believe. As I mentioned in the overview, some of the reviews I had read made me doubt our choice prior to our trip. However, for the most part, we found the accommodations to be pleasant and clean and the staff friendly, fluent in English and attentive to our needs. We had a problem with the safe in the room (prior occupant had left it locked) and it was taken care of promptly. Maid service was daily and room was spotless. There were no bugs and no mildew as I saw reported on some sites. It is true that the rooms could use a little refurbishing.
The only problem we really experienced was the fact that the room/studio we were assigned did not have a microwave or coffeepot, as described. We inquired about them and were told they would "try" to get us one - we never heard back from them. But, since we didn't really plan on eating in our room, it was really not an issue for us and we didn't even bother to ask again. At first we didn't think our fridge worked either, but we simply moved it to a different wall socket and it worked fine and kept our soda and water icy cold.
We've traveled in Mexico for years and we really aren't that hard to please or that demanding. We accept it for what it is! What it is NOT is the fast-paced rush-rush rat race that we are escaping when we take our vacation. We don't mind!
This hotel is a few blocks south of the downtown area of San Miguel - on the west side of the island where the water is generally calm. Snorkeling (although not great at this location) is available right off small concrete piers just beyond the pool - something fun to do if you're not up to taking a snorkeling trip elsewhere or just want to spend a short time in the water. There is a man-made beach outside of each wing of the hotel, with palapas for those who wish to have a shady spot to relax. Cruise ship and dive boat traffic are just off the shore and interesting to observe. There is a wonderful supermarket just across the street (Chedraui) that has wonderful bakery goods and just about anything else you might need. A regular Mexican Walmart!
