Southwest Utah

Overview

Quote:
Tour Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Snow Canyon, north rim of the Grand Canyon, Brigham Young winter home, Joshua Tree Forest, etc. Our most memorable moments were seeing eagles. We had never seen a free one before but we saw at least six during our week in SW Utah.

Quick Tips:

St. George seems to be one of the warmest places in Utah during the winter. There are a tremendous number of things to see near it, a really nice town and a great base from which to tour.

Best Way To Get Around:

Due to the many sights being spread out, a car is a necessity.

The resort was undergoing renovation but the work did not affect us. It will be even nicer once finished. Our unit was beside a heated pool which was used daily (in January). There were nice views of the surrounding areas from the resort. There was also an atrium in the middle of the unit so renters could go into it and sit if they wished. The resort was built on a golf course. It also has activitie...Read More

Hunan City

Restaurant

Quote:
Hunan City was a new restaurant in a new shopping center off I-15 just south of St. George. The food was really good, the portions were fairly large, and the service was excellent. We were amazed at how fast the staff moved to serve the customers. The food variety was very good (Chinese). The prices were about average for Chinese but below average for as nice of a restaurant as Hunan City was.

Applebee's

Restaurant

Quote:
Applebee's was very clean. The quality, variety and quantity of food was very good. I had salad and chicken and my wife had salad and fish. We really enjoyed the food and were full without ordering dessert. The staff was very nice. The restaurant is busy, so I would try and avoid going during the rush periods at lunch and in the evenings, especially on weekends.

Pancho & Lefty's Mexican Restaurante and Cantina

The restaurant was decorated nicely and was clean. The quantity of food was good; however, the taste of the food was just "so-so" and it was not as hot as it should have been. The staff were nice, but should have been more prompt with the service. It was okay but did not merit a return visit.

JB's Restaurant

Restaurant

We were expecting JB's Restaurant to be similar to JB's Smokehouse in Texas. It was more like a Denny's or IHOP. Considering the type of food and the prices, the food was good value for the money. The staff were friendly and prompt.

Outback Steakhouse

Restaurant

Quote:
The restaurant is located near the outlet mall by the Interstate passing through St. George. My wife and I both had steaks. They were cooked to perfection. The spices added to the steaks really brought out the flavor and the taste was excellent. The salad before our meal was crisp and fresh, the house dressing was very nice and made for a really good salad. The waiter was very friendly and the service was excellent also.

We will go back to the Outback if we return to St. George.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park Photo, Bryce Canyon, Utah
Quote:
Bryce Canyon has some of the most fantastic views and scenery I have seen. Standing on cliffs and looking at the amazing land formations and varied colors was unbelievable. I saw many advertising pictures of Bryce, but none did it justice. It is at high elevations, so the temperature is quite a bit colder than areas 20-50 miles away. Be sure to take a heavy coat in the winter. Also, heavy snowfalls will result in difficulty getting around the park.

Zion was amazing. We took Hwy 9 through the park. There is a park fee, so we bought a year pass to US parks and more than recouped the cost at Zion and Bryce. Hwy 9 gave some fantastic views. There were sharp turns, cliffs at the edge of the road and a tunnel through the mountain with man-made "windows" for ventilation and viewing from the car. We also took the road to the Temple of Sinawava. This has great views also and is a must. We also took the road out of Virgin to the north. It takes you past various houses and farms before entering the park. This is a great drive also. We could not get all the way through because the road was closed at the higher elevation due to heavy snow accumulat...Read More

Snow Canyon is in the hills west of St. George. To one side of the canyon are the Red Mountains, to another are the White Hills, and eroded sandstone rocks of both colors make up the cliffs on both sides of the valley. There is also a lot of black lava, which came from old volcanoes not far away. The lava, cinder cones, and lava caves are the main points of interest, but the other colorful earth formations and cliffs are beautiful. Snow Canyou is colorful, scenic and little-visited but definitely work the trip.

Brigham Young Winter Home

Brigham Young Winter Home Photo, St. George, Utah
Quote:
Brigham Young found the Salt Lake City climate too cold during the winter, so he had a home built in St. George. The lady tour guide was fantastic. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. The home had an addition added to the front after Brigham Young began using it. It was later owned by others until the Mormon Church acquired it and turned it into a museum. Because of this, it contains few of Brigham's possessions; however, it is furnished really nicely with era articles donated or acquired. The wood in the area was pine and Brigham liked the look of mahogany; therefore, he had rails, moulding, furniture, etc. hand-painted using feathers to resemble mahogany. Seeing this beautifully restored...Read More

After leaving Snow Canyon, we drove through the Joshua Tree Forest. It is not really a forest and there are not any trees. A Joshua Tree is really a tall, branched yucca. The forest is very arid with lots of Joshua Trees. There are also a lot of cacti in certain areas. It is not beautiful but very unusual and interesting. Definitely worth the trip.
