Indian River Lagoon with dolphins

A December 2003 trip to Sebastian by carolyn.wilkerson

Quote: We enjoyed Treasure Coast. We had the use of a motorboat for only $50 for the week. We visited the lagoon and the intracoastal waterway. Oyster Bay Resort is right on Indian River. The pool was warm and hot tub was even warmer!!! There were so many free beaches nearby, with free parking and body surfing. We will definitely do this again.

Oyster Bay was very cosy. We had a two-bedroom/one-bathroom unit. We had plenty of room for our party (three adults and two kids) without opening up the sofa bed. But it would be tight for six and there was no dishwasher. However, for only $50, we had the use of a motorboat filled with gas to tour the lagoon and intracoastal waterway, which made up for the one bath and no dishwasher. You can usually spot manatees and dolphins in the lagoon, as the water there is only four feet deep there (and about 12 feet deep in the channel). The manatees were elusive, but we did see dolphins. There was a beach bar nearby for our single son to visit – it played great music. There were activities and cra...Read More

Dock your boat at their dock and walk inside or drive down to by the park and come inside. The Lobster Shanty is a special treat when you are on the Treasure Coast. The location is on a street that has been turned into a park. A bridge used to cross the Indian River there, but it has been relocated to the north. The Lobster Shanty has corn fritters that melt in your mouth, as does the powdered sugar on them. They keep them coming. There is a large salad bar and a diverse menu. You can order lobster, fish, crab, steak, or just plain hamburger. Seafood bisques are especially nice. And their rice pudding is wonderful as is the tapioca pudding. The grandchildren had their old standby - spa...Read More

The Patio is a very interesting experience. The decor is eclectic. There are Italian items along with seaside items. There are antiques here and there. There are unusual windows. This is one place that must be experienced for the full flavor. It isn't a pub, but has a bit of that feel. It isn't a luxury restaurant, but has a bit of that feel and food would qualify. It isn't a beach bar, but the open areas and screened areas give a bit of that feel. The dress is casual but can be beach casual or even dressy as everyone fits in. The food is wonderful and very reasonable. Seafood is one specialty, but steaks are great as well. One of our favorites is the seafood pasta. I tried my first f...Read More

Harbor Oceanographic Center is a wonderful place to visit. Tours are not expensive, but very informative. There are both boat tours and institute tours that explain about the fish and plants in the Indian River Lagoon and the research at the institute. The kids were interested in the sharks. Did you know that the institute is a major educational center on sea life? Did you know that they have specially designed ships to explore the underwater world? Did you know that they teach people how to raise saltwater fish away from the sea? Did you know they train saltwater fish to live in fresh water? Did you know they supply clown fish (think Nemo) for aquariums? Their gift shop has books on bird life...Read More
