Lassen Volcanic National Park

A travel journal to Mineral by Judy

Quote: Established as a national park in 1916, this is a nature-lover's paradise with 150 miles of hiking trails (17 of which are part of the Pacific Crest Trail) old growth timber, waterfalls, mountain streams and alpine tundra. Wilderness permits are required for overnight backpacking and camping outside of campgrounds.

Camping, hiking and just 'exploring' the natural wonders of this 106,000 acres are highlights enough for this huge national park. Expect snow from early October to late June.

This trail begins in Susanville and follows the old Southern Pacific Railway bed which has been developed into a wide path suitable for hiking, riding and x-country skiing. It follows the Susan River Canyon and has a gentle grade. It's rich in history lessons from the old railroad and logging days.

This driving tour also known as 'Lassen's Death Route' comprises a segment of the California Historic Trail. There are 54 markers along the way. This 1849 route to the gold rush in California took one month longer than other emigrant routes to the Sacramento Valley. Many people died along the way. Beginning at Goose Lake and ending at Lassen's Rancho at Vina in Sacramento Valley, this historic route follows Rd A21 between Hwy 36 and Hwy 44. A wonderful history lesson here...

Located 17 miles N.W. of Chester, this guest ranch consists of rustic cabins with no TV, no electric, kerosene lamps. There's a restaurant on site and the lodge has a beautiful fireplace. The swimming pool is hot-spring fed. The elevation here is 5700' and the surrounding scenery is lovely. I have never stayed here, but friends of mine have and they've recommended it highly.

Located on a lovely lake at 5890' elevation, you'll have boating, fishing and swimming very close by. The campstore has showers and a laundry. Ranger programs are interesting and informative. Bears are a big problem in this area, so take precautions and just be careful not to leave food around.

Fee: $14.00 per nite.
