A January 2004 trip to Fort Lauderdale by njbro

Quote: My first trip to Fort Lauderdale was an adventure. Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort was a terrific location right in the heart of the action. Many things to see and do. Right next to Bonnet House Museum and 1 Block from the beach.

Best Things Nearby:Everything is nearby. Water taxi, shopping, the beach, restaurants, the airport, Port Everglades, Bonnett House--this is an excellent location.Best Things About the Resort:The best thing about the resort is the location. You can see and do so many things from this resort that you should never be bored. There are also many places to eat and drink nearby and the beach is absolutely wonderful.Resort Experience:This is an older resort and it is under new management. They are redoing the rooms and were working on the windows and doors when we were there. Everything was clean and the supplies and storage in our one-bedroom unit was generous....Read More

Mai-Kai

Restaurant | "Mai Kai"

Quote:
Eating at the Mai Kai is entertainment more than fine cuisine. This is a Hawaiian luau. The food was very good and they have an extensive menu of tropical drinks. One couple in our party got a $20 drink for two that came with two very long straws. The concierge at our hotel had indicated that they had a special menu for $38 per person that included a show. We did have to ask for this specifically. They also have another package for $45 and you can order off of the menu as well. The atmosphere of the whole restaurant and the gardens around it is definitely part of the experience. But bring a flashlight as it is very dark and hard to read the menu. The show was fantastic and as g...Read More

Bonnet House

Attraction | "Bonnett House Museum and Gardens"

Quote:
If you have an appreciation of art, nature, or old Florida history, you will love Bonnett House as I did. It is a little oasis of green in the overdeveloped Fort Lauderdale area. This Florida winter retreat is a serene example of wealth and privilege in a time gone by. The beautiful estate has become a museum of the artwork of its owners, both extraordinarily talented. The unique plantation style of the house and the beautiful, natural surroundings are a welcome change from the Fort Lauderdale hustle and bustle just outside the gates. The estate was name for the bonnet lily that grew along the marshland between the house and the ocean. I can certainly see why Evelyn Bartlett (the l...Read More

Discovery Cruise to Grand Bahama Island

There were six of us that took the one-day cruise to Grand Bahama Island. Three of us were Florida residents, so we were able to get the discounted rate. They only asked one person for Florida ID, however. We had to board very early, but fortunately we were only about five miles from Port Everglades and there was no traffic at 6am. Parking costs $12 and there is a security fee of $10 per person charged at the Port. Birth certificate and picture ID or passport is required. We had a wonderful time. Although it was still a little cool on deck, there were many places to go inside. The casino was fun and not crowded. The lounge on the main deck had bingo and other entertainment. There were ...Read More

Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop

Attraction | "Circus/Swap Shop"

Quote:
The flea market and circus grounds are about 8-10 miles down Sunrise from the beach, going towards I-95. There is always plenty of traffic on this road, so it will take some more time than you think to get there. It is a typical flea market full of odds and ends, T-shirts, "gold" jewelry, sunglasses, etc. It is huge. We did not spend a lot of time shopping as some areas seemed very sleazy. We paid $1 to go sit in the close seats to see the circus. If you do not want to pay, you can still see from the bleacher seats higher up. The circus performance surprised me. I really wasn't expecting much, but it was very professional and entertaining. All of the acts were excellent with th...Read More

Water Taxi

Attraction | "Water Taxi Tour"

Quote:
We walked from our resort across the drawbridge to the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel and walked through the lobby to the Intracoastal taxi stand. The taxi comes by at 10:21am going south. We sat in the open air part of the boat in the back, but there is air-conditioning if the day is hot in the closed middle portion of the boat. The driver and the ticket person provide a narration of the yachts and mansions along the waterway. It is a very pleasant and informative tour of Fort Lauderdale. You can get on and off at various stops all day for the $5 price. Do not take this if you are in a hurry, but if you want to tour and stop at various shops and restaurants, this is a great way to go. We go...Read More
