A February 2004 trip
to Key Largo by HVACGordon
Quote: The resort is five stories high and has 30 units. It is located on the Gulf next to the first bridge on the keys. A Mariner is on site that can handle up to a 100 foot boat. Tennis courts, shuffleboard, sun deck, jacuzzi and heated pool are on site.
Key West is not the same - it is packed with tourists from the cruise boats; we could not enjoy the shopping areas due to the crowds. The cruise boats come in and drop off over 1000 people. They are everywhere.Best Things About the Resort:The location - it is next to the first bridge into the gulf side. We love to watch the boats go by. The last time we were here, we saw all of the props for the movie True Lies going by on barges.
The pool is heated and has a sunny exposure all day. Plenty of lounge chairs.Resort Experience:A large screened in Lanai runs the full width of the unit with access from the master bedroom and living room. The Lanai has a view of the gulf, mariner and pool area.
Quite a bit of activity on the waterway as the bridge next to the resort is the first access to the gulf on the keys. Traffic going over the bridge is very noisy and continuous, you get used to it after a day or so. The noise could affect a light sleeper.
Some of the units are refurbished, we did not luck out our unit was old and in need of refurbishing.
The master bedroom is large and has a no TV, queen-size bed, two end tables, a large bureau, dressing table with mirror and bench, and one large closet with a mirrored door. The furniture is outdated. The bedroom has a rug in need shampooing.
The bathroom is very tiny - only one person can use it. It has a tub, cabinet, and large mirror.
The size of the bathroom does not make any sense, as it is located off the master bedroom and the bedroom is very large. If you have guest using the sleep sofa in the living room, the only access that they have to the bathroom is through your bedroom.
The combination living room and dining room is large. The dining area has a new good-size table with four chairs. The kitchen needs remodeling. It has full-size appliances, four-burner hotplate, dishwasher, and microwave. The kitchen area was not clean enough to satisfy us - we deep-cleaned everything, including all the dishes, which were sticky. Bowls in the cabinet still had chips in them from the last people; the cutting board had traces of cheese still on it.
The living room area has an entertainment center with VCR, 19" TV, sleep sofa, and glass-topped coffee table; the sofa is imitation leather and is not comfortable. The reclining rocker is comfortable. The entertainment center has quite a bit of storage space.
They do charge you 40 cents for any connected call on the phone system, even local and 800 numbers.
Laundry area is located on the third level. Washers are $2.00 and two dryers are $1.50. We thought the price was high.
The resort does not have any planned activities.

After visiting and shopping the adjacent store, it is great place to have a drink and appetizer. I recommend the smoked fish spread. They also have a full menu if you desire.
The shop is great. They have everything that you could imagine: a full line of fishing gear and name brand clothing.
The boat that Ernest Hemingway used while his boat was being built is on display in the store. You can actually board the boat and look it over. The restoration is perfect.

We ate outside. My wife had a Seared Tuna Salad that was very good. I had a pulled pork sandwich that was very good. The atmosphere was casual; if you like beer, they have an all-natural choice brewed on site.

Restaurant | "The Buzzard's Roost"
We enjoyed the cob salad. It is huge and is available with chicken or grilled fish.
You may dine indoors, where it is air-conditioned, or outdoors in a screened-in area. They also have an outdoor tiki bar with outdoor dining next to the waterway.
The menu has plenty to choose from and the portions are large.

Restaurant | "Snapper’s"
The food is very good, especially the almond-encrusted yellowtail. You can feed the Wild Tarpon from fish food available. The Tarpon that come in are huge - 4 to 6 feet long. If you have a boat, dockage is available.

It is so handy right next door to the condo. They also have a store that has beer and some wine, fishing supplies, boat rentals, and snacks.
