A July 2003 trip to Treasure Beach by devnige

My spouse, my 18-month-old son, and myself spent an incredible two week honeymoon at Blue Marlin, a beautiful and tranquil villa in Great Bay.

Having spent many of my teen years in Jamaica, I have seen most of this beautiful island and I planned on showing my family one of my favorite areas, Treasure Beach. In two weeks, we saw YS Falls (much better than Dunns, I think) – they’re not too crowded and there’s plenty to see and do. We had a few drinks and lunch before heading off to ride up Black River where we saw alligators and stopped for crab and crayfish at a small resto on the river. We also made a overnight trip to Sandals Negril (wonderful place; I highly recommend it). But this was really a vacation that was spent taking long walks on quiet beaches in Great Bay, a serene fishing village that is within easy walking distance of Treasure Beach. It is a perfect example of what old Negril was like in the late ‘60s/early ‘70S -- just peace, minimal hustle, and very laid back.

Quick Tips:

Make sure you see Lovers Leap (incredible view) and Mandeville, a charming town with lots of old colonial appeal.

Best Way To Get Around:

Unless we were making a day trip, we walked most of the time; taxis are few, but can be found if necessary.

Hotel

Coquina
Coquina, also on the Blue Marlin property, is a three-bedroom, three-bath two-story villa that has a great breeze that cools the night and brings in the soothing sounds of waves. Also a few beautiful antiques here.

Blue Marlin
It’s hard for words to describe this gorgeous villa, which is situated right on the beach. This family owned villa is kept in tiptop shape and was recently renovated in a wonderful tropical eclectic style. The warmth you feel on arriving makes you think you have walked into the home of a friend, rather than, a commercial establishment.

In the photos, you will see what has to be one of the most beautiful four-poster beds, one of many antiques that grace this villa. There are four bedrooms, three bath, a full kitchen that is at your disposal, although, the wonderful lady that takes care of the place will keep you so well fed that you will hardly have a need to. There are two villas on the property; the other is a two story with three bedrooms and three baths.

The sunsets are a must see from the hammock in the summerhouse. You will also be able to see Arawak artifacts actually found at Blue Marlin. They have a cannon from a sunken galleon also an actual replica of a cask from Isabel and Ferdinand’s era -- very interesting.

Restaurant

dining room
The food at Blue Marlin was incredible - you are never left wanting. The cook on at both villas will thoroughly spoil you. You will wake up to a full breakfast of your choice (mine is ackee and salt fish), then lunch and dinner will be at your leisure whenever you have set it up with the cook (I needed to put a price range, but this really is not applicable, as it depends on your tastes. You can buy your own groceries or they can be gotten to your specs.)
