Quote: Maui = paradise! Driving down the road, you have the mountains on one side of you and the Pacific Ocean on the other side.

After the sunrise was where my fun stopped - we got our bikes and started on the trip down. This is supposed to be the fun part! It wasn't for me and I am writing this just so other riders will be careful and if they have problems with elevation to not do this ride - about 2 miles down from the start, my bike either had a problem or I lost control; but the bike and I went over the side of the mountain and fell about 30 feet. I suffered a fractured collarbone and a fractured pelvis and lots of bruises - we had to extend our trip by 5 days while I was in the hospital. To this day I'm not sure what happened - but I want all of you to be careful. If you have had problems with elevation in the past, then ride the in van or be extra careful. I think this is what happened to me, but I don't remember.
The scenery is very beautiful - the silversword was blooming while we were there and the clouds had cleared so we were able to see the bottom of the crater but the overall experience was diminished by falling. You do not hear about those storied - but talking to the EMT's and the hospital staff, they said I was very lucky to come off the mountain alive, and that comment totally freaked me out!!
Be safe! That is all I'm asking!
