Quote: Surrounded by the peaks of the Alps, Lucerne is a picturesque town with a beautiful lake. The water is so clear and the air brisk. Old bridges zig zag and the old and the new collide in the realm of architecture.

Arriving by train from Basel through the beautiful countryside and mountains. Sitting by the lake and writing postcards. Touring the new Jean Nouvel Convention Center (there is a private tour at 2:30). A boat ride, with all the lovely fall colours along the coast.

Quick Tips:

Pick up the Luzern City Guide at the Tourist Office (train station is the one we went to). It has a good map and description of all major sites. Our hotel gave us good information on excursions up the alps - find out about those if you have more time and the weather is good.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking...definitely by walking. Stay close in town and you can walk anywhere in this beautiful lakeside town.

Right in the middle of town, there are rooms with shared bathrooms and some with private facilities. We stayed in a double room with private bathroom - we faced the back and not the lake and the facilities are very basic but clean. Prices are generally expensive in Switzerland, so for about $69 per night including breakfast, this is a great deal.

Chapel Bridge

Attraction

This wooden bridge features prominently in postcards of Lucerne, and rightly so. It zigzags across the lake, and actually is the dividing line between lake and the start of the river. Look for the paintings at the roof of the bridge as you cross, although the originals have almost all been destroyed with the disastrous fire in the early 1990's. Take your photos here, reflection of bridge in the clear lake water and the beautiful Alps in the background.

You can't miss this new building, with it's horizontal plane roof slicing into the lake. It's right next to the train station (by Spanish architect/engineer master Santiago Calatrava) and it's by French architect Jean Nouvel. It's steel and glass with subtle pools of water in some precarious places (like right by the entrance. The guide told my sister that they usually keep spare clothing for concert goer's who place their feet in the wrong place!) So watch where you walk...and no, it's water and not marble floor there! Inside, there is a modern art musuem, which I skipped. Rather, take the elevator all the way up to the roof top terrace and admire the beautiful view. My sister took a building tour, a...Read More

Here is another bridge, not as interesting as the Chapel bridge, but you will no doubt pass this narrow wooden bridge on your stroll around the lakeside. The peculiar thing is there is a tiny chapel right in the middle. It's more like a shrine with flowers etc, but interesting enough for you to cross the bridge to see it.

Lucerne Lion Monument

This is right before the entrance to the Glacier Garden. It is a carving at the side of the hill of a dying lion, in memory to the Swiss guards who died in Paris defending Louis XVI in the late 1700's. There is a small pond and is really a park for children and some tourist groups. I personally didn't find it interesting at all and decided also to skip the Glacier Garden. Instead, I bought some postcards and sat by the lake!

Though I didn't have enough time to do so, next time I will definitely add a few more days to include excursions. Of particular interest are the William Tell Express, the Titlus Rotair (includes the revolving cable car) and the Golden Pass. Check out website: http://www.switzerland.com/ for more information and photos. It's a great informative site.
