A February 2004 trip
to Hsinchu by panda2
Quote: Hsinchu is regarded as the Silicon Valley of Taiwan.
Shin Yeah Taiwan Buffet close to our hotel, Little Ding-Dong Science Park, especially when we had the place practically to ourselves. When I was trying to determine the pricing at Shin Yeah Taiwan Buffet, we came across the help of a young woman and man, both students studying English, who explained how they priced the food. During our lunch, we inquired how to get to the Little Ding-Dong Science Amusement Park. He explained that there was no bus service to there, and taxi or car was the best way. He was kind enough to go out of his way to drive us there, negotiated a discount for us, and set up to arrange a taxi for us to return by when we were done. He had an appointment for within the hour so he inconvenienced himself for us. I was overwhelmed by his kindness and selflessness. The people of this small country overwhelm me with their love, kindness and selflessness.
The room was clean, with firm beds and a mini-fridge that needed defrosting, so I did that. There were a couple of roaches in the room. The bathroom floor tiles didn't seem to be slippery with wet feet. There was no bathtub; instead, the bathroom is tiled so it functions as a shower. They put some up some kind of decoration on the bathroom ceiling, which was a nice touch. But I'd rather they spent the money on making the room basics better. Our room had two beds, but it was once two rooms, as evident from the sub-floor gap covered by the carpet.Don't bother calling them on the phone unless you speak Mandarin Chinese, else they will hang up on you like they did with us. We just showed up with our luggage, and they gladly accepted our cash, though I noticed the VISA logo, so they probably would have accepted a credit card.

Golden Swallow Hotel

The food is good--it's fresh, you can see what you’re selecting, and the price is inexpensive. The staff didn't speak any English, but they tried to be very helpful. I was trying to figure out how they priced the food, and customers who did speak English explained.Open every day, including holidays.Hours: lunch starts at 11am; dinner starts at 4pm

Shin Yeah Taiwan Buffet
66 Dungmen Street/Mintsu Road
Restaurant | "Pig & Whistle"
There's dancing and/or live music entertainment upstairs on the second floor. After our meal, we availed ourselves. The person outside motioned for us to go in and didn't charge us any cover after we made it known we're not locals. We danced for a few songs and then left. Bring earplugs with you to protect your hearing.

Little Ding-Dong Science Park
102-1 Kengtzyko, Sankeng Tsuen, Hsinfeng Hsiang
Man Come is a gay sauna in a small building with several floors. There's a TV lounge and shower. It wasn't busy when we went on a weeknight. It gets busy on the weekend. The staff person spoke very little English, but was very friendly. It looks like the establishment is older and somewhat rundown. It costs NT$400, and you can get better rates if you pay in advance for multiple visits.
The sauna is located opposite the bus station, not very far from the train station.Phone: 524-4010
