San Antonio or Austin

A May 2003 trip to San Antonio by imcarly13

Hill Country is beautiful. Even though we spent most of our time out and about, it's nice to have a home-y place to come back to.

Quick Tips:

On your way to the resort, stop at a grocery store and pick up a few snacks or even meals if you plan to eat in. The resort is near a few small convenience stores, but we didn't find any larger stores with variety until we got closer to town.

Best Way To Get Around:

You will definitely need a car here. If you plan to stay on the resort grounds for your entire visit, it may be worth it to weigh the cost of a rental versus an 80-mile round-trip taxi to the airport. Most major attractions are about an hour's drive away, though the natural bridge cavens are closer.

Dick's Last ResortBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

They call it Dick's for a reason. They do not allow childeren in after lunch since it is a bar. But it does get pretty rowdy. The idea is that all of the waiters are "dicks" and they will say that they hope your food is horrible and will tell you to "get it yourself." They are more mild mannered when interacting with a family, but it is very amusing to see. Just know what to expect and don't take it personally. I hear they have great bachelorette parties!!!

Of course, they have a Starbucks here too. . . It's just like any other and has a better view than most. It is right next to the Hard Rock Cafe and it overlooks the riverwalk.

It was right on the riverwalk. It is indoor/outdoor dining with great atmosphere. The food was reasonably priced and tasted good, too!

San Antonio ZooBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Even though is was a wet day, the zoo was still crowded. We did an express tour of all of the exhibits, but I would have loved to stay all day. There are enough exhibits to occupy an entire afternoon.

This is an educational experience for any person and great fun for a family. There are many different marine animals and also interactive exhibits. Just remember that Texas is very, very, very hot during the summer!

Hill Country (TX)Best of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

For my son's first birthday, I wanted to take him to San Antonio Zoo. Why? It seemed like a good excuse to check out another Silverleaf Resort. Silverleaf’s Hill Country resort is conveniently located between San Antonio and Austin TX. This area is great for all ages and interests. I love animals and the outdoors, and my husband likes to relax on the riverwalk. SeaWorld is nearby too. The natural bridge caverns are an awesome sight -- there are also rappelling packages that take you deeper into the caverns than the standard tour. The nightlife is outrageous for the young or young at heart. There is a university nearby too. OK, enough about the location.

The resort itself was beautiful. It is off the beaten path in a quiet area. The multi-level layout creates a beautiful view of the hills. My nine-year-old stepdaughter enjoyed swimming and playing in the activity center with the other visiting children. The suite was clean and everyone enjoyed the whirlpool tub. Even though we spent most of our time out and about, it was nice to have a home-y place to come back to.
