Major highlights to keep you busy include:

Museums – There are art museums, history museums, or special museums, such as the Intrepid Museum which I visited.

Shopping – You can find just about every type of store imaginable. During the time, I was there, all the holiday decorations were out in full force, which made window-shopping extremely enjoyable. You must see Macy's of course.

Dining – Just name the type of food desired and you can find a restaurant to match your wish. I ate lunch at an informal chain restaurant (Bubba Gump) and dinner at a nice restaurant near the train station.

People-watching (or gawking)– The hustle and bustle of New York is part of the lore of the place. In the pictures below, you can see the huge lit billboards of the famous Times Square and all the people watching the skaters at Rockefeller Plaza.

Best Way To Get Around:

Location: Perfect since it was within a block of Penn Station(where the train would leave from).

Décor: Excellent with beautiful wood paneling, warm colors throughout the restaurant, interesting light fixtures, a bar area, booths and tables.

Food: Excellent. The menu was quite extensive, but the waiter made some excellent recommendations. Both of our meals were very delicious and I would order the same entrees (except I would want to sample one of the other choices).

Service: Excellent. When we first entered the restaurant, there seemed to be quite a few tables available. However, on closer examination, I discovered that all, except the one we got, were reserved. Within 15 minutes, the place was full. I was worried about the time, but our dinners arrived promptly and getting to the train station on time was not a problem.

Extras: The waiter also was very accommodating and provided extra vegetables instead of potatoes since my wife is on the Atkins diet.

The popular Forrest Gump movie led to the opening of the Bubba Gump Restaurants. I found the menu very funky and brought back memories of the movie. If you visit the web site, you will reminisce also. Some of the movie dialogue is interspersed with descriptions of the food. The names of the food items are also very non-boring. Why list "Fish Sandwich" when you can name it "Dixie Fishwich"! I selected the BBQ Pork Sandwich with their special sauce. It was not the best pork sandwich I have had, but that is consistent with other chain restaurants (Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Café, etc). In other words, food quality is not the number-one feature of the restaurant. You enjoy the restaurant for the other intangibles such as atmosphere, décor, mood, etc. I especially enjoyed eating at a window seat. From that vantage point, I was fascinated by all of the pedestrians on the sidewalks. Also, the billboards at Times Square are huge, full of flashing lights, and fun to read! Since I was on the second floor, I had a second-story view of Times Square.

In addition to eating lunch, I also visited their gift shop. That is where they sell what they call "Gump Gear." The gumpism T-shirt (with the infamous chocolate saying) was a perfect gift for my sister!

The top three impressive parts were:
Exploring the USS Growler, a Top Secret Submarine. It was fun and educational to experience how the men lived when they were on the sub. Click here For information about the USS Growler .
Walking along the US Intrepid aircraft as well as the numerous other aircrafts present on the grounds. You get to see interiors and exteriors. Click here For information about the Intrepid .
Seeing the Concorde. At the present time, you can only look since the tours do not start till the spring. Click here For information about the Concorde .

There were lots of other exhibits and videos. You could also find out how to read radar and go on a flight simulator. The $15 admission fee was well spent since I spent several hours enjoying this museum.

All visitors to the museum select one of three options for enjoying the museum.
A daily program lists descriptions of approximately 15 shows a person could preview in one of the screening rooms or theaters. Think of these shows as restaurant specials of the day. The specials are handpicked to please a wide audience. Based on the description and the times listed, you pick out what you would like to see.

In addition to viewing one or more of the specials, you could also select a particular TV show from the catalog of shows on file. This option allows you to see a show on an individual TV. In other words, this museum is the repository of old TV shows. What a pleasure to pick a show from years ago and relive history!

A final option is to select a 20-minute or a 40-minute tour of the facility.

I selected (from the catalog) to see an episode of the Phil Silvers show, one of my favorites from years ago. It was interesting to sit back and enjoy the show again.

Note: Plan to spend the entire afternoon at the museum (which does not open till noon). I wished I did not have prior arrangements to meet up with others at a specified time. If I had more time, I could have seen some of the shows in the theater. I would also have liked to taken a tour. This museum really was a special find!
