Warm and Wonderful Hawaii

A February 2004 trip to Hawaii by beesweet

A short break from the bitter cold of Pennsylvania to these wonderful islands seemed like a good idea -- until it was time to come home! Most of the people we met were wonderful, the weather was outstanding, and the views were awesome.

There's so much to do here. The helicopter tour is a must-do to really appreciate the island's beauty. We received some really wonderful suggestions for food and activities from some of the local people.

Quick Tips:

Be prepared to RELAX here.

Best Way To Get Around:

We used a rental car, but I highly recommend walking as much as possible. Petty theft is a big problem here, so if you do rent a car, don't leave anything in it.
This was our first stay at a B&B. The owner, Edee Seymore, couldn't have made us feel any more comfortable. Our room was in a wing attached to the house and faced the pool, which was surrounded by all kinds of tropical plants. The room was spacious and clean, and had fresh flowers throughout. Edee made a different delicious breakfast every morning. We had such a wonderful time at Victoria Place that we didn't want to leave!

If you're looking for an economy-priced hotel, with an ocean view - this is the place. The staff is exceptionally friendly and the rooms are exceptionally clean. We did try their "world-famous pork chops," and really enjoyed them. The prices at the restaurant were just as reasonable as the hotel room.

This place was a little disappointing - it seemed a little run down. It was clean, though, and the price was fairly inexpensive. The staff was pleasant and there was coffee, tea, and muffins available in the morning.

The owners of this B&B were friendly, and Petra prepared an exceptional breakfast for us while we were with them. Everything was spotlessly clean, but our bed was not as comfortable as I would have liked. For some reason, we didn't have any hot water for showering either, but the beauty of their B&B was still enjoyable to us. We stayed in the studio, but in the future, I'd prefer one of the apartments that they have to offer.

We had a large ocean-view room with a king bed. The view was OK, but would have been better had we been above the first floor. We couldn't open our sliding glass door because it had an alarm system attached to it. Again...had we been on another level, we could have opened the door to allow for the wonderful fresh air. The room was clean, and the staff were very friendly.

We were staying at the Aloha Beach Resort, so we decided to try their restaurant. It was a very pleasant surprise! We had the blackened ahi and the coconut shrimp - both were absolutely delicious. We also had the clam ono chowder instead of salad - we could have made a meal of just that, it was so GOOD. The following morning, we had the breakfast buffet here too. It wasn't as outstanding as the meal the previous night, but there were plenty of fresh local fruits, eggs, bagels, rolls, and lots of fresh coffee and juice.

This was our first experience with Thai cuisine. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a barbecued chicken appetizer, some fried rice with shrimp, fried fish platter, and cashew chicken. Everything was excellent and the price was really reasonable. Before we left, I ordered some of their tapioca pudding, which I believe they made up fresh - it was totally unique and just yummy!

We ate at this wonderful restaurant twice. The first time, we'd just arrived on Kauai and weren't really hungry. The aroma of the restaurant is just wonderful. We had soup and salad on our first night - both were very good. The second night, we had mahi mahi and shrimp - both were very good. I had my first taste of papaya seed dressing here - yummy!

This was an excellent way to view the island. We called in the morning to reserve an afternoon flight. The pilot was very helpful in describing the different areas that we flew over.

Kilauea LighthouseBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

As I was told - "the lighthouse is the best deal on the island." For only $3 per adult, you can see this authentic island lighthouse that is no longer in use. One day a year (on its birthday - I think it's sometime in May), you're even allowed to tour the inside of the lighthouse. But during February and March, you have a wonderful chance to see lots of whale activity. They even have binoculars for you to borrow for a closer look.

We decided to try a B&B while we were on vacation in Hawaii. The first four nights that we were in Kauai, we stayed at Victoria Place in Lawai. I can't say enough nice things about this B&B and its owner, Edee Seymore! We had a wonderful time there and met so many other wonderful people while we stayed there.

Thanks to Edee's thoughtful suggestions, we decided to do the Air Kauai helicopter tour, tour Grove Farms, and went to a luau at Gaylords. I can highly recommend all of these things -- we enjoyed them all. We also went to Waimea Canyon and hiked down one of the trails about a mile, but decided not to go all the way to the river because it was getting late and the thought of being on the trail after dark wasn't too appealing. Of course, a trip to Kauai wouldn't be complete without seeing beautiful Hanalei Bay and the quaint village of Hanalei. We got a delicious shave ice at the Wishing Well in Hanalei. One of the best deals on the island of Kauai is at the Kilauea Lighthouse. I could have spent an entire day there watching the whales (of course the whales are a seasonal thing there).

After four nights in Kauai, we flew over to the Big Island. The scenery here is considerably different from Kauai. We drove completely around the big island from Hilo we drove up to Kamuela. Kamuela was completely different from any of my expectations of Hawaii. It was certainly beautiful, and while we were there cooler than what I expected, the wind was constant. We saw quite a few whales off the northwest coast of the big island too. From Kamuela we drove south towards Captain Cook. The landscape changed once again, from the grasslands of the ranches to the lava covered Kona Coast. By the time we got to Captain Cook, we were seeing coffee trees and macadamia trees everywhere. When we left Captain Cook, we drove down to Southpoint. If we hadn't had all of our luggage with us, we would have hiked over to Green Sand beach (maybe next time!) The windmills at Southpoint were an unexpected surprise. There must have been at least 30 huge windmills on the road to Southpoint. From there we drove over to Volcano. We stopped at the Volcano winery. Being beekeepers, we were curious about their macadamia mead. It was good enough that we bought a bottle! Then we were on to Kileaua -- it's a vast expanse of hardened lava. Really, it’s an amazing sight.

After a little hiking around the volcano we headed over to Hale Makamae in Pahoa, which was another B&B that I'd made reservations at. Pahoa is a curious little hippie town, with a great Thai restaurant that I can thoroughly recommend: Ning's Thai Cuisine. While we were staying here we drove up the Hamakua coast. We stopped at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens while we were touring the coast.

Finally, we headed back to Kauai for one night at the Aloha Beach Resort. This was a reasonably priced resort with an excellent restaurant. They also have a wonderful little snorkeling beach that I'm sorry to say I didn't get a chance to use. We were sorry to leave this wonderful island of Kauai!
