Melaka is located on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsular, with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore several hours' drive north and south, respectively. Because of its central position on the Straits of Malacca, Melaka has enjoyed a rich history as a strategically and economically important port.
It used to be a busy trading center attracting Indian and Chinese merchants, but its prosperity soon drew the attention of the European superpowers. It has been ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and later the British. Each have left their influence on the city.
Red Square and China Town were my favorite places. And if you like antiques, this is the place for you. You can buy them here and ship them home and often still pay less!
Quick Tips:
The port is pretty much gone now, and you definitely shouldn't expect pretty beaches or pretty water. Instead, the history, mix of cultures, architecture, and cuisine make this place unique, and worthy of a visit. Their slogan in Malaysia is: Malaysia...truly Asia. I definitely agreed that it felt much more "Asian" than Singapore.
It is a great detour when in the area, good for a short 3-day trip or so. Check out Red Square, the many museums, and as much of the local cuisine as possbile! Be sure to go out in the evening and chat with the locals...you will learn much more than you will in the museums.
Best Way To Get Around:
You can get around easily by foot, but be careful...the roads are narrow, and pretty busy for their size!
Pictures to come!
