Weekend in Melaka, Malaysia

A December 2003 trip to Melaka by TracyJay

While in Singapore, we took a weekend trip to Melaka, Malaysia. As the saying goes. . . Malaysia IS truly Asia!

Melaka is located on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsular, with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore several hours' drive north and south, respectively. Because of its central position on the Straits of Malacca, Melaka has enjoyed a rich history as a strategically and economically important port.

It used to be a busy trading center attracting Indian and Chinese merchants, but its prosperity soon drew the attention of the European superpowers. It has been ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and later the British. Each have left their influence on the city.

Red Square and China Town were my favorite places. And if you like antiques, this is the place for you. You can buy them here and ship them home and often still pay less!

Quick Tips:

The port is pretty much gone now, and you definitely shouldn't expect pretty beaches or pretty water. Instead, the history, mix of cultures, architecture, and cuisine make this place unique, and worthy of a visit. Their slogan in Malaysia is: Malaysia...truly Asia. I definitely agreed that it felt much more "Asian" than Singapore.

It is a great detour when in the area, good for a short 3-day trip or so. Check out Red Square, the many museums, and as much of the local cuisine as possbile! Be sure to go out in the evening and chat with the locals...you will learn much more than you will in the museums.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can get around easily by foot, but be careful...the roads are narrow, and pretty busy for their size!

Pictures to come!

Right in Red Square is the Historical Museum and Ethnography Museum. The Historical section has an in-depth view of Melaka’s progression through time, using old photos, paintings, sculptures, and maps. The Ethnography section has exhibits on the various communities in Melaka, focusing on cultures, traditions and ceremonies. I am not a museum "type," but if you want a thorough history lesson on your own time, this is the way to get it.

Attraction | "Antiques"

There are tons of antique shops throughout Chinatown. I heard from other tourists that you can get great deals there, but have since read that is not true. I was looking for furniture and found that is was not as cheap as I thought it would be. So...shop at your own risk! But...you can be sure there are tons of shops to chose from!

Attraction | "Nightlife"

There is not a whole lot of nightlife, but we found a couple of little pubs in walking distance from Red Square and Chinatown. I highly recommend getting out and walking around and finding little pubs where locals hang out. My husband and I hung out with some locals on two separate occasions and had a great time. We always seem to learn so much about the people, community and culture when we do this. Nothing like bonding over a beer!

Attraction | "Red Square/Christ Church"

Red Square is a must-see when you are in Melaka. All the buildings are painted red, and you will find the famous windmill, and see all the Dutch influence. You can get around easily on foot or take a ride on a rickshaw! In addition, there are little shopping areas all around, and the famous Christ Church. The Dutch Christ Church was built in 1753. Although it may look closed, you can get inside on the left-hand side of the building.
