Return to the Big Island

A January 2004 trip to Hawaii (Big Island) by Carole BB

The Big Island is a magical place with diverse climates and incredible vistas. We swam in steam vents from the volcano, ate fruit off the trees, saw Kilauea erupting, watched whales and a school of spinner dolphins from a boat, and totally enjoyed the "aloha spirit".

The Big Island is a magical place. Where else can you play in the snow and swim in the ocean within an hour's drive? The island is so diverse that there are never-ending things to see and do and we did it all...by land, sea and air!

Quick Tips:

Go on a whale-watching tour, take a plane ride around the island and drive the least travelled roads to see the best of the real Hawaii.

Best Way To Get Around:

There's really no choice but to rent a car...and make it one with decent clearance if you want to do any "off-road" adventuring.
Best Things Nearby:
Village Market, Sparky's Restaurant

Best Things About the Resort:
Quiet, well maintained with spacious accommodations

Resort Experience:
We awoke each morning to the sound of wild turkeys looking for handouts. If the real turkeys weren't clucking, the neighbors were gobble-gobbling from their balconies to get their attention. Other than that, the place was quiet and very comfortable. We choose the upper two-bedroom unit and were glad we did because the views of the golf course were really nice. The orientation is well worth going to for information about the island and the opportunity to get discounted activities. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

Who'd expect to have great great mexican food in a tiny town off the beaten path in Hawaii?? Not only was their food excellent, but their homemade salsa was the best we've ever had. They bake their own pies daily, and we were fortunate enough to sample their lilikoi pie, which was also one of the best desserts we've ever had!!!

Attraction | "Kilauea Erupting"

How often does one get to see the center of the earth? Watching Kilauea erupting from above was one of the most amazing sights we've ever seen. We took a 2-hour fixed-wing plane tour around the Big Island and were fortunate enough to see Madam Pele at her best. We were told that the eruptions had not been that intense in years. The bursts of molten lava and ash were amazing and the resulting flows into the ocean were nothing short of amazing.
