Xanadu

A January 2004 trip to Freeport by Mary Ann Carl

Xanadu has gotten a lot of bad press, but they have obviously made a lot of improvements. We really enjoyed our stay.

Overview

Our suite was lovely and very large. It was decorated in bright colors and there was a balcony with great view. The only drawback to Xanadu is its isolation.

Quick Tips:

We brought cereal, crackers, etc. with us because the groceries are expensive.

Best Way To Get Around:

Either rent a car (if you're comfortable driving on the left!) or plan to spend money on taxis. You can't walk anywhere from Xanadu except to the beach. Of course, that is my favorite place to be!
Best Things Nearby:
The beach!

Best Things About the Resort:
Large, attractive studio apartment with beautiful view from the balcony.

Resort Experience:
Xanadu is still being renovated, but I didn't talk with anyone who was not having a good time. I believe the timeshare rooms must be completed and they are lovely.

The timeshare staff is friendly and very helpful. Hattie was a delight. I took the timeshare tour just to see what is happening. I had a bacon, eggs, grits, and toast breakfast with Ed, who was very knowledgeable about the points system. I received two T-shirts, a bottle of rum, and a $25 gift certificate for the on-site dining room. I was pretty clear that I wasn't going to buy, but everyone stayed just as friendly.

The recreational staff was fun and offered games and prizes on the beach every day (their comments were not appropriate for children, though!). The Monday night welcome party was GREAT fun -- as many Bahama Mamas as you could drink, conch fritters, and meatballs. We played a game with Timmie and Freddi, and then Steve took over with karaoke. He had a great voice and encouraged all of us to participate. It was one of the best times I've ever had at a timeshare welcome party!

Beach chairs cost $2 a day. Some days, I just took my beach towel (provided by the resort) and lay on the sand -- such comfortable sand!! The lunch at the beach restaurant was good -- fried conch, fried grouper, hotdogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese, crab cakes, etc. It was not too expensive if you don't add the $5.75 Bahama Mama to it!!
