Even though the name says 'hotel', the San Remo is more of a pension, on the European model. It is very popular with international visitors. I found it through sheer luck while thumbing through a magazine. It is described as an 'Italianate Victorian' structure. The rooms are fairly small, but well-furnished and decorated with antiques and art. There are also beautiful interior windows and stained glass skylights. The bathroom facilities are shared (I think there are a couple of rooms with private baths) and they are simply emmaculate. I never had to wait for a shower either. Restaurant | "The Fudge House"

The Fudge House is just a simple, old-fashioned candy shop, one of my favorite places!! It made me think of Willy Wonka. Colorful candies and chocolate always do. The smells alone are delicious. I couldn't decide between some fudge or the homemade peanut butter cups. I ended up with a caramel apple that was first rate. They make them right there and the caramel was still warm. What a dream!!

The boat tour goes out into San Francisco Bay. There is audio narration that is fairly informative. The tour takes you around the island where Alcatraz is located. You also get to go out to the Golden Gate Bridge. The tour is a fantastic value for the money. I really enjoyed seeing the Bay area from out on the water. It probably lasts for around 30-40 minutes.

Pier 39 is exactly that - a pier. At the same time, it is a pier like no other!! It is an area with shopping, restaurants, and local attractions. Many of the cruises and tours depart from right in front of this pier. One of the most famous sights along the pier is the California sea lions that often sun themselves on the wooden rafts that float near the pier's side. There are benches on the pier that make it easy to spend time watching the animals enjoy the rays and adoration. I enjoyed a ride on Pier 39's Venetian Carousel. This is a tiny store packed with some of the most beautiful Babushka dolls I have ever seen!! The sales lady was extremely friendly and let me touch and admire the dolls without being the least bit pushy or impatient. Some of my favorites included a set with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and a set of Babushka cats!! The store also has jewelry boxes and lots of other collectibles and trinkets. Some of the woodwork pieces are amazingly intricate. The shop is very interesting and quaint. I really enjoyed looking at the dolls and talking with the lady working there. The prices seemed reasonable, but I am no expert in Russian collectibles.

What a neat place!!! This store is a walk-in kaleidoscope. There are all sorts of kites and windsocks in a million colors hanging on display. The kites come in all shapes and sizes. They are from all over the world as well. Things are twirling and buzzing and kids are giggling as parents ponder purchases. One of the coolest things in the store is the collection of 'how-to' books and instruction manuals. You could learn to build any number of wind friendly objects.

This was the best money I spent during the entire time I was in San Francisco. I was only in the city for two days so I didn't have a lot of time to walk around. I stayed very near Pier 39 so I was familiar with that area. On the other hand, I really didn't know where to start as far as seeing the rest of the city in the limited time I was going to have. I took a Gray Line Motorized Cable Car tour. The cars leave from Pier 39 and they run all day long. It costs $16. You can get on and off of the cars at various stops through out the city.
